Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To ensure effective arrangements are in place for the Council of Governors to fulfil their statutory duties, specifically supporting the Company Secretary with respect to key statutory duties.

Enable and support the governors to fulfil their roles effectively by providing a high level of administrative support, including acting as first point of contact, taking enquiries via multiple communication channels and responding accurately and efficiently. To provide an efficient and effective liaison service to the membership in matters relating to member support or involvement, offering a problem solving approach to the issues raised.

Develop and deliver a programme of regular membership events to attract new members and to maintain the interest and involvement of current members, including co-ordinator of the Annual Members Meeting.

Co-ordinate the work plan and agenda setting process for the Council of Governors (and its Committees). Arrange meeting dates and prepare and collate papers for distribution and publication; attend meetings; produce and circulate minutes; and coordinate the identification and completion of actions arising, to support governors in fulfilling their statutory duties.

To work with the Council of Governors to design an effective and comprehensive long-term membership strategy.

Guidance to governors that ensures highly complex and sensitive information regarding the Foundation Trusts can be disseminated to the wider public.

To manage the process of formal governor elections.

To ensue a well-developed approach to membership recruitment and be responsible for the management of the Trust's membership database.

To co-ordinate the approach to membership engagement, enabling governors to fulfill their statutory duties.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Degree level qualification or relevant significant substantial experience
  • Evidence of further professional development

Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Knowledge of good practice in membership organisations
  • Understanding of corporate governance in at least one sector (private / public / charity)

Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge of NHS Foundation Trust governance arrangements

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience working in related areas gaining the necessary skills and experience for the post.
  • Experience in report writing, presentation, influencing and persuasion, developing action plans to cover a range of complex activities.
  • Experience of working productively with partner organisations, groups and committees.
  • Experience in planning, managing and delivering events to a high standard.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of working with patients and/or public in engagement processes.
  • Knowledge of the social and cultural demographics of Stockport and Tameside & Glossop communities.

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria

  • Ability to produce accurate, high-quality reports, minutes, presentations, briefings and analysis requiring attention to detail at all times.
  • Proficient use of MS Word, MS Powerpoint, e-mail and internet applications.
  • Excellent organisational, communication, presentation and interpersonal skills and ability to prioritise workload to meet changing demands.
  • Expected to occasionally deal with complaints, handling them in a sensitive manner to reach an adequate conclusion.
  • Ability to work unsupervised, on own initiative, to meet challenging deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain high standards of diplomacy and confidentiality. Problem solving skills with ability to act on decisions.
