Job summary
We are seeking a dynamic experienced registered Midwife who desire to progress their career on the management and leadership journey.
Maternity inpatients are a 23 bedded mixed Antenatal and Postnatal ward within a busy maternity unit. North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust delivers approximately 6000 births a year across two sites.
The successful candidate must be passionate about inpatient services and willing to participate in a manager bleep holder rota 7 days a week but not overnight. This role has a clinical element working with their team.
Existing management experience is not required as full mentoring and development opportunities are available. Knowledge of national and local drivers is essential, and you would be keen to develop an ongoing service into the future of Midwifery services.
The ideal candidate will be open and transparent in their approach and lead with inclusive and compassionate leadership styles.
Main duties of the job
The post holder is responsible for the effective line management of staff within the area of responsibility, and has clinical responsibility for the safe and effective care delivery within their Ward Area.
The post holder will be responsible for safe and effective day to day operational management and clinical leadership of the midwifery services, within the area. Will be expected to lead a team, team build, organise others in their actions and set priorities, objectives and goals within their sphere of responsibility. Will be expected to performance manage both the activity and members of the team. To maintain a high quality, working environment in which staff can maximise their potential and further develop their skills in clinical practice.
Will act as bleep holder for the maternity unit (all areas of service) as required.
The maternity unit environment is both unpredictable and challenging. The post holder will be faced with many competing demands for attention and will be expected to exercise excellent judgement in dealing clinical needs.

Job responsibilities
Provide clear and consistent leadership to the team, supervising midwifery and support staff to deliver quality care and clinical excellence.
Take responsibility for the day to day operational running of the service area alongside other members of the Senior Clinical Management Team, ensuring that safe practice is maintained.
Ensure all care is delivered within resources available.
Ensure all activity data for labour ward is collected and recorded to ensure Trust achieves the appropriate funding for work undertaken.
To participate in the maternity unit on call rota.
Act up for inpatient manager as required. Provide cross cover for other midwifery managers as required.
Is required to analyse complex clinical situations that require analysis and comparison of a range of options, including child protection issues.
Ensures Midwifery procedures are carried out in accordance with Trust policies and procedures in operation.
Effectively deploy staff to meet both staff and client needs and ensure integration across community and hospital. Inform line manager of any deficiencies in service provision.
Monitor performance of team members and take remedial action in the interest of safety, including disciplinary action in accordance with Trust Policy where appropriate.
Responsible for risk assessments within area of responsibility, and highlighting potential risks through the Datix Risk Management system.
Management of Datix incidents, the investigation of such and active resolution, with support of the risk midwife. Responsible for ensuring that all incidents occurring within area of responsibility are reported and actioned in a timely manner.
Take part in selection and interviewing of staff with clear understanding of trusts Equal Opportunities Policy and recruitment practices.
Responsible for departmental activities including proactive management of sickness and absenteeism, completion of allocated appraisals etc, according to the Trusts policies.
Establish and maintain channels of effective verbal and written communication within area of responsibility, the department and the Trust where applicable.
Participate in setting of standards and development of guidelines and pathways within the Directorate.
Organise others and own workload.
To actively participate in departmental meetings and to act as a representative on relevant Trust committees, and report back accordingly. Undertake a regular ward team meeting.
Take an active role in the investigation of complaints and taking corrective action as
Undertake Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and investigations were delegated, as appropriate.
Work with the Senior Management Team to set monitor and maintain evidence-based Midwifery care and experience standards. Will support and assist the Midwifery Management Team in developing the Maternity Services in line with national recommendations and local initiatives.
Initiate and participate in clinical audit programmes.
Liaise effectively with the senior midwifery team, highlighting areas of concern in a timely fashion and taking action where appropriate to reduce concern.
Will be responsible for maintaining an excellent standard of written and oral communication both for her/his self and for those within his/her sphere of responsibility.
