Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced band 6 Midwife, or existing band 7 Midwife, who is looking for a new challenge to progress into a managerial role, to take on the role of Maternity Manager. This is a rotational post, which will initially focus on our community midwifery teams.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide professional leadership and management support primarily for the community teams, including our continuity of carer team. As a member of the maternity management team, the post holder will work closely with the senior management team to maintain and improve the maternity care given by the Trust. The post holder will have a specific responsibility for the community teams and will work closely with other members of the maternity management team, antenatal clinic team leader and specialist midwives to ensure the integration of the hospital and community services in maternity in addition to deputising for the Matron in her absence.

They will have a strong awareness of clinical governance and the importance of application to the role, in addition to involvement with research development, standard setting and audits. An awareness of Human Resources policies would be beneficial but full training will be given.

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Registered Midwife
  • Diploma or Degree in Midwifery

Desirable criteria

  • Leadership experience

Experience and knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Must have a minimum of 3 years experience as a Band 6 Midwife
  • Full UK Driving License

Desirable criteria

  • Management experience

Skills, abilities and competen

Essential criteria

  • Broad knowledge base, with evidence of applying theory to practice
  • Experience in a range of expanded roles, with ability to demonstrate a broad appreciation of the organisation and provision of care
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, with experience in mentoring/developing others
  • Flexible approach to working patter (manage constraints like working unsocial hours, heavy duties etc)

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of preparing duty rosters with analytical skills to ensure needs of the service can be met
  • Understanding of performance management
