The role

As Main Presenter you are the face of our regional news programmes, bulletins and ITVX. You may be asked to present other news or non-news output too.

An essential part of your role will be contributing to our social and digital output. You will be expected to come up with ideas on how to improve and develop our online coverage as well as help with the input of text and video material, blogs, special features, extended coverage of stories, and other information. You will liaise closely with both the Programme & Digital Editor and Digital Content Editor to ensure our coverage is always as exciting, current and comprehensive as possible.

The Main Presenter is the last check for potential Compliance, Legal and ITV Trust breaches, so a thorough knowledge of policy in these areas is essential.

The Main Presenter plays a key role in supporting the Head of News and their management team with new initiatives and difficult messages, using their influence in the newsroom in a positive way. The role will entail but not be limited to:

  • To deliver output, from the studio or live on-location, to a high standard, ensuring that the output is presented in the most engaging, informative and entertaining way possible
  • To help define the look, feel and tone of the news service online as well as on screen, participating in and contributing to production and planning meetings and providing editorial guidance and support to the rest of the news team
  • To find and develop original story ideas and maximise the impact and relevance on screen with all the skills and technology available
  • To be proactive about Diversity, Equality & Inclusion ensuring news output effectively reflects stories and issues across all the communities in the region
  • To react swiftly and effectively to breaking news stories
  • To be actively involved in all stages of production, participating in the prospects, planning, treatment, programme meetings where possible
  • To ensure the digital service is provided with contacts and diary items on a regular basis
  • To maintain and take responsibility for the highest standards of editorial accuracy, checking scripts to make sure that content complies with Compliance, Legal, and ITV Trust requirements
  • To keep up-to-date with local, regional, and national news and current affairs as well as with developments across the ITV news network
  • To assist and mentor other members of the editorial and technical team, providing advice and training as required
  • To develop and maintain a network of regional and network contacts
  • To represent ITV at organised events and with the general public as required
  • To maintain and update newsroom planning files by ensuring key information from contacts, press releases and agency copy or viewers' calls/email is entered into Wolftech.
  • To ensure on-screen and off-screen appearance meets the company's standards at all times
  • To research and produce original, high quality news and programme features where appropriate and time allows
  • To be willing and able to use all newsroom technology (following appropriate training)

Shared team responsibilities

  • To learn and develop new skills as required to enable you to carry out any tasks which are reasonably requested of you, and for which you have received appropriate informal or formal training; pro-actively finding ways to promote and sustain a multi-skilled approach. Developing skills across digital and online news production as required.
  • To ensure the operation makes the best use of available resources within budget ensuring all newsgathering adheres to all relevant ITV guidelines. To understand and act upon ITV's Health & Safety and Risk Assessment policies
  • To work closely and respectfully with all members of the editorial, production and presenting teams, both locally and in the wider ITV News and ITV family, to implement the overall editorial strategy, ensuring ITV News Workflow guidelines are followed and ITV values are embraced.

  • To work closely and proactively with other ITV newsrooms, including Regional, Network, GMB and ITVX fostering and maintaining relationships for the benefit of ITV News as a whole, contributing to projects and forums and supporting ITV News initiatives as required.
  • To provide honest and constructive feedback to all colleagues for the overall benefit of the news operation.

Skills you'll need (minimum criteria)

  • NCTJ qualification or similar
  • Experience of regular News presentation
  • Significant journalistic experience
  • Live location television reporting/presenting experience
  • Experience of conducting live interviews
  • A positive and active social media profile focused on bringing in viewers
  • A demonstrable commitment to Diversity, Equality & Inclusion

Unusual challenges or circumstances

  • Full time hours for this role include two late shifts per week.
  • You may be required to present on location or travel to district offices or to work in other news operations as well as attending relevant forums, development sessions and meetings off site as part of their role
