GENERAL SUMMARY

Working as part of Celeros Operations Management team, the primary role of the Machine Shop Manager is to act as the first line of management accountable for the safe and efficient operation of the machine shop, and the weld and fabrication areas.

This includes, but is not limited to, people management of the machine shop team, weld and fabrication team allocating daily tasks in accordance with the schedule to meet customer demands, managing performance and development issues, machine shop and weld shop workflow, as well as meticulously always maintaining visual management standards, introducing improvement projects to drive and support KPI's. Driving daily toolbox talks ensuring team engagement and buy in. Technical ability to support the daily machine shop running.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)

On an ongoing basis, the Machine Shop Manager must assume full responsibility and will be held accountable for the following:

  • Driving a positive / safe working environment ensuring housekeeping and visual management is maintained at the highest of standards across both the machine shop and weld and fabrication areas.
  • Lead and manage meetings from startup meetings, communicating all key messages including but not limited to SQCDIP, safety alerts, quality warnings, toolbox talks and daily priorities.
  • Maintain and communicate machine shop and weld and fabrication areas performance ensuring visual management boards are used in all areas. This will guarantee to employees, colleagues, customers, and other managers from across the organization can review and understand status and key KPI tracking.
  • Steer positive KPI results, ensuring you hold true to our company values including always doing the right thing. Always leading by example.
  • Be responsible for and manage a proactive and sustainable 5s culture within each accountable area.
  • Take a positive approach to coaching, developing and performance managing cell team members when required.
  • Ensure standard operating work procedures are created, maintained and followed.
  • Monitor and Control actual versus estimated operation times. Improving where needed and holding the team accountable to the planned times.
  • Identify and implement operational improvements.
  • Ensure productive work is allocated to team members in line with the schedule and overarching business plan and forecasted revenue.
  • Liaise while building key relationships with appropriate support functions (quality, engineering, inspection, planning, scheduling, and supply chain etc.) to resolve issues and any potential production constraints in a timely manner.
  • Technical ability and background in machining and fabrication and weld vital to allow support of the responsible areas and teams daily.
  • Controlling start, stop and break times and ensuring they are always adhered to.
  • Managing the team's recovery hours ensuring efficiency and that downtime is at a minimum.
  • Control and maintaining overtime working in line with production requirements.
  • Working closely with the material management team to ensure efficient material flow within and between areas.
  • Driving booking discipline and guaranteeing it is always maintained.
  • Leading quality to the required standards, raising any quality concerns as soon as possible.
  • Deliver regular communications to team members, peers and other functions.
  • Liaise with appropriate support functions to resolve issues and potential production stops in a timely manner.
  • Implement and preserve safety Gemba walks.
  • Conduct periodic audits as required by EHS and Quality departments.
  • Raise NCRs as and action when required.
  • Facilitate and action any corrective actions.
  • Any other duties as deemed reasonable.

PEOPLE MANAGER RESPONSIBILITIES

As a People Manager responsible for the effective management of people you are accountable for:

  • Leading and managing all employees in an effective and positive manner, driving positive engagement and motivation across every accountable area.
  • Creating a trusted relationship with your people. Understand what your people value and where possible support them in achieving this (this includes understanding the various responsibilities and interests your people balance inside and outside of work).
  • Having open and honest coaching conversations to help your people to identify their strengths and development areas both formal and informally.
  • Supporting your people's personal aspirations and objectives in a way that's aligned to the objectives of the team and the business.
  • Where appropriate, helping your people broaden their network or identify more challenging or stretching roles or projects to support their career progression.
  • With support and guidance from HR, create and maintain a robust competency matrix for production along with training and development plans.
  • Ensure training and development plans are actioned in a timely manner to meet requirements.
  • With support from Senior Management and HR, create and maintain Succession Plans for production, identifying critical gaps.
  • Knowing about the health and wellbeing support available and proactively offering appropriate advice and following up on this.
  • Effectively manage sickness absence, following company policy and seeking guidance from HR when required.
  • Understanding the performance and development planning process; supporting and managing your people through the process.
  • Supporting your people throughout the year, through regular conversations, tracking progress against objectives and managing any performance issues.

EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Proven track record in building effective teams and has the assertiveness and drive to ensure that their team meets operational goals, and that Team Members are strongly managed.
  • Strong focus on delivery of output to achieve bottom line results; has strong awareness of what is needed to make this happen when under pressure.
  • Strong execution skills, focused on driving their team to achieve improvement initiatives that positively affect our customer experience and the output revenue.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and knowing when to use them and with whom; this will include managing conflict; setting standards and being assertive enough with Team Members to ensure they are maintained.
  • Having a strong range of skills to effectively manage the machine shop and weld and fabrication areas; for example, the layout, maintaining health & safety, Environment, Quality standards and the flow within the responsible areas.
  • Time served machinist and/or welder (or equivalent hands-on work experience) in a similar manufacturing environment (advantageous)
  • Knowledge of Clyde Union systems, materials, products, customers and components.
  • Technical ability to resolve and work through any critical challenges stopping production.
  • Previous supervisory/management experience within a similar manufacturing environment and industry.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE

  • CWEng or European Welding Engineer certified or other formal qualification advantageous.
  • Working knowledge and experience of ASME and EN weld procedures qualification, material specifications and welding processes.
  • Engineering qualifications.
  • Working Knowledge of ASME Section II, EN and RCC-M materials
  • Able to meet the requirements as defined in ASME IX QG 106 and CUP QA Program
  • Ability to interface technically with other departments - Engineering, quality, supply chain and material management.
