MAC Makes Music Manager

We are currently recruiting for a Manager for MAC Makes Music to lead on the development and delivery of the MAC Makes Music Programme in partnership with Youth Music. This role requires working strategically with multiple partners including music leaders, Music Hubs and school settings to provide creative opportunities for children and young people.

MAC Makes Music is an award-winning programme providing innovative music making opportunities for children and young people with limited access to music provision. As the Manager for MAC Makes Music you will lead on the provision of high-quality music making experiences led by a team of highly experienced musicians and champion innovation in music making approaches, support workforce development and advocate for equality, equity, diversity, and inclusion within music education.

This post is funded through financial investment provided by Youth Music and is formally contracted through until June 2026.

Principle Purpose of Post:

  • The MAC Makes Music Manager is responsible to the CEO and Artistic Director for developing, leading, and managing the MAC Makes Music programme.
  • To ensure the programme meets its aims and objectives set with funders, primarily Youth Music, and others who support the programme. This role will function as the lead representative to Youth Music.
  • Ensure excellent financial management of the MAC Makes Music programme budgets and related project budgets.
  • Ensure effective monitoring and evaluation of the MAC Makes Music programme and related projects.
  • To manage organisational and administrative tasks of all related activities.

Responsible for:

  • Direct line management of the MAC Makes Music Co-ordinator.
  • Overseeing recruitment, contracting and management of freelance Music Leaders, Trainers and Consultants working on MAC Makes Music programmes.
  • Overseeing recruitment and management of volunteers, work experience placements, or interns across MAC Makes Music programmes in conjunction with HR.

Strategy:

  • To build upon existing plans for MAC Makes Music within Youth Music applications, while designing innovative plans to enhance the programme.
  • To build and maintain a strong network of partnerships with local, regional, and national providers, organisations and individuals within music education / inclusion.
  • To offer strategic support around inclusion to West Midlands Music Education Hubs through individual meetings, group meetings, sitting on their advisory boards, and chairing inclusion subcommittees/working groups as required.
  • To represent and promote MAC Makes Music at meetings, conferences and other events, enhancing its profile regionally, nationally and internationally.
  • To research and stay up to date with relevant music / music education / inclusion legislation changes or sector news.
  • To represent MAC Makes Music on MAC's Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion group.

Management and Administration:

  • To work closely with MAC Makes Music Co-ordinator to ensure administrative tasks related to the running of MAC Makes Music are completed effectively.
  • To manage programmes of inclusive music-making activities for children and young people, following and adapting plans set out in Youth Music applications.
  • To liaise with all stakeholders and offer transparent and proactive communications.
  • To work with external evaluators to ensure effective monitoring and evaluation of MAC Makes Music activities, including production of progress and evaluation reports.
  • Prepare and monitor contracts with artists, arts organisations and community partners to ensure the smooth and effective delivery of the MAC Makes Music programme.
  • In liaison with MAC's HR staff, to implement the organisation's policy and procedures for ensuring the safety of staff and participants. This includes safer recruitment, safeguarding, and GDPR.
  • Liaison with other MAC departments as required e.g. HR, Operations, Technical.
  • To prepare and present such reports on MAC Makes Music activity as required.

Finance and Development:

  • Work closely with the CEO/Artistic Director and Head of Finance, to develop, manage, monitor all budgets relating to MAC Makes Music including the main Youth Music budget and smaller project budgets with partners.
  • Administration of financial systems, including petty cash, monitoring of purchase order invoices and generation of sales invoices
  • To produce information for financial reporting to Youth Music and other funders as required.
  • Work with CEO/Artistic Director and Head of Development to develop a diverse selection of future funding streams to continue MAC Makes Music programmes, and to contribute to funding applications as required.

Communications:

  • Provide a contact point for all MAC Makes Music queries.
  • In liaison with the CEO/Artistic Director and MAC's Communications Department, lead on the marketing, promotion, and public relations for MAC Makes Music.
  • Work with MAC Makes Music Administrator to produce exciting and regular content for MMM social media channels, and for other sector spaces such as Youth Music Network.

General

  • Implement MAC's Environmental Policy and consider how this role can contribute to MAC's sustainability goals.
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the CEO and Artistic Director.

Person Specification

A person specification describes the areas of knowledge, skills and experience a person should possess in order to take up the post.

Essential

  • A passion and commitment to developing Equality, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion within an arts and cultural setting.
  • Have at least three years' experience of working with children and young people in an arts, education, support service or community led context or through freelance capacity.
  • Knowledge of the music education and community music sectors.
  • Experience of working with Disabled people, particularly those with learning disabilities.
  • A proven track record in co-ordinating and evaluating learning or development led programmes or activities for young people.
  • A proven track record and enthusiasm for working collaboratively with a range of partners including those from non-arts backgrounds, including strong relationship building skills.
  • Have experience of developing, monitoring and managing budgets.
  • Ability to communicate to a wide range of stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
  • Recognises the potential digital technology holds within youth culture.
  • Ability to develop funding proposals and ideas.
  • A self-starter who can motivate others, is not afraid to ask questions and can hold a keen eye for opportunity.
  • An adaptable team player, who is able to plan, negotiate and make decisions.
  • Ability to manage and prioritise a range of complex projects and competing demands.

Desirable

  • Interest in a variety of musical styles
  • Familiarity with Music Education Hubs and their inclusion agenda.
  • Familiarity with other local, regional, and national music organisations working in music education or community music.
  • Experience of embedding Youth Voice within activity or an organisation.
  • Clean driving licence and own vehicle.

Additional Requirements

  • Willing to travel within and beyond the region as required and to work occasional unsociable hours.
