About us:
The Department of Film Studies seeks to make two appointments at Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Film Studies. We are especially interested in candidates whose expertise intersects with the following research areas: in particular cinemas of South Asia; also cinemas of the Global South (Latin America, Middle East, and Africa), New Media theory, Television (media) history, Documentary, Artists' moving image, and Film/Media Practice as Research. We seek applicants who will consolidate and/or complement the existing methodological approaches to these areas of research (theoretical, historical and archival) of the department.
These exciting new posts will contribute to the excellent research profile of the department while also engaging in teaching, leadership roles, and pastoral support across our expanding portfolio of courses. This includes the BA Film Studies and Postgraduate program in Film Studies (including the Film-Philosophy Pathway and the Joint PGT program with the Courtauld). Applicants will be committed to exploring new, and inclusive, methods of research and pedagogy.

Film Studies is distinctive in its commitment to interdisciplinarity, and the position requires teaching across a broad range of areas. They will also supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Film Studies or Film/Media Practice as Research or a closely related discipline, with an excellent knowledge and understanding of a field of expertise relating to cinemas of South Asia, cinemas of the Global South, New Media theory, Television (media) history, Documentary, Artists' moving image, and Film/Media Practice as Research. They will be a highly effective educator, with experience of teaching and assessment in Higher Education, a commitment to student learning and welfare, and an aptitude for working within an interdisciplinary framework.
The post is an open-ended position with a probation period, which is usually three years. About you:
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
- PhD awarded in Film Studies or Film/Media Practice as Research or a relevant interdisciplinary field (for Grade 6, awarded or close to award)
- Clearly defined research interests and plans compatible with the research strategies of the Department, Faculty and College, including (Grade 6) establishing a track record of high-quality publications (Grade 7 & 8) having a track record of high-quality publications, grant income and public engagement
- Experience of teaching relevant subjects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with evidence of the potential for innovative and effective teaching to small and large groups, in person and online, and the ability to engage and inspire students of diverse and international backgrounds
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of a relevant field of expertise relating to cinemas of South Asian cinema, cinemas of the Global South and New Media theory, Television (media) history, Artists' moving image, and Creative Practice as Research
- Experience in teaching film and/or media production at Higher Education level, in several of the following areas: Introduction to Curatorial and Creative Media Practice, Introduction to Filmmaking, Digital Video Practice, and Critical Media Practice (Film/Media Practice as Research)
- Demonstrated technical excellence in digital video camera operation and digital audio-video editing (Film/Media Practice as Research)
- Commitment to student learning and welfare, including providing academic advice, assessment feedback, and pastoral support (e.g. as personal tutor)
- Experience of curriculum development (Grade 7 & 8)
- Experience and skills in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) policy development and practice, inspiring sustainable cultural change (Grade 8
Desirable criteria
- Completion of appropriate training (e.g. Higher Education teaching and learning/academic practice; equal opportunities, diversity, and inclusion) (Grade 6, 7 & 8)
- Fellowship of the HEA (Higher Education Academy) for Grade 7 & 8
- Experience of academic administration
- Demonstrable networking skills, facilitating partnerships, and bridging professional and academic communities of practice (Grade 7 & 8)
- Research and teaching interests and expertise which focus on experiences of living and working in the Global South and its diaspora
