Job Description

This is a new post created to provide additional management support to the Learning and Participation programme at MAC. This department is responsible for promoting an extensive programme of creative courses, classes and workshops at MAC. We employ around 70 Artist Tutors part-time to deliver on a wide-range of activities. Last year 53,000 people participated in our busy programme. The aim of the programme is to encourage children, families and adults to engage with creative activities and to enhance talent development opportunities for our team of Artist Tutors.

Principal Purpose of Post

The role of the Learning & Participation Manager is to support the Head of Learning & Participation to plan and manage the extensive courses and classes programme at MAC and related special projects.

  • To work effectively with MAC's diverse team of part-time Artist Tutors to ensure that they create popular and dynamic workshops and in doing so deliver a high-quality and inclusive service to participants.
  • To lead on contractual administration of the Artist Tutors e.g. collating payroll, organising contracts.
  • To lead on customer enquiries in line with MAC's Customer Feedback policy.
  • To lead on developing a range of digital courses and classes notably but not exclusively for children and young people in areas such as music production, film making, photography and animation.
  • To act as the producer for MAC's bi-annual Little Geeks Festival and co-producer of the annual Girls that Geek conference for teenagers.
  • To assist in the planning and programming of a workable timetable for all courses and classes including one day and term-time courses.
  • To support with the strong financial management of the Learning & Participation budgets and related project budgets.
  • To ensure an effective evaluation of the course programme and related projects.
  • To support in the development of Learning and Participation policies and practices, ensuring MAC remains relevant, progressive and innovative in its approach and in meeting the needs which reflect the diversity of the city and region it seeks to represent.

Responsible for:

  • To support with the recruitment and daily management of Artist Tutors, Life Models and Freelance Artist Tutors.
  • To liaise with MAC's Technical, Sales and Customer Service Teams to ensure the learning programme is effectively delivered

Key Responsibilities:

Strategy:

  • To work closely with the Head of Learning and Participation to identify and develop resources, opportunities and partnership possibilities to maximise ambition, reach and impact of the learning and participatory programmes.
  • To work closely with operational colleagues in the management, development and monitoring of MAC's Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Design and Media studios.

Management and Administration:

  • To have a positive working relationship with the Head of Administration, HR Manager and Head of Technical Resources to ensure that contractual requirements are set and met.
  • To be responsible for leading on the Learning & Participation payroll checks each month.
  • Liaise with the HR Manager, to lead on all recruitment requirements for the Learning and Participation department, in line with MAC's Recruitment and Selection Policy.
  • To work closely with the rest of the Learning and Participation team to ensure the consistent delivery of the programme in a reactive and proactive manner

Finance:

  • To work closely with the Head of Learning & Participation on the reporting of budgets and accounts.

Communications:

  • To be the point of contact for Learning & Participation queries and respond in a timely fashion, in line with MAC's Customer Feedback Policy.
  • With support from MAC's Communications Department, lead on the marketing, promotion and public relations for Learning & Participation.
  • To develop with the Head of Learning & Participation, new relationships utilising opportunities to extend MAC's networks and contacts for those who might contribute to future activities.

General:

  • To implement MAC's Environmental Policy and consider how this role can contribute to MAC's sustainability goals.
  • To maintain awareness of current issues and trends in education, learning and community sectors, retaining a broad interest in the contemporary arts.
  • To participate in training and development activities as required and to assist with the training and development of colleagues as appropriate.
  • To carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Head of Learning & Participation.

This is a full-time position. Part-time requests for 30 hours per week will be considered. Weekend and evening work may be required from time to time.

Person Specification

A person specification describes the areas of knowledge, skills and experience a person should possess in order to take up the post.

Essential

  • Have a minimum of two years' experience of developing creative learning or development led programmes, with proven project management skills within an education, community or arts facility, or through a significant freelance capacity.
  • Have experience of developing, managing and delivering participatory activity in a range of media and settings, with a clear understanding of creative evaluation methods.
  • Have an interest in the potential of digital technology within creative practice.
  • A proven track record and enthusiasm for working collaboratively with a range of partners including those from non-arts backgrounds.
  • Have ability to recognise different ways to retain, develop and engage artists and participants.
  • Ability to manage and prioritise a range of complex projects and competing demands.
  • Have a proven commitment to developing arts programmes which will reflect the variety and diversity of community interests in Birmingham.
  • Have experience of developing, monitoring and managing project and programme budgets.
  • Have excellent written and oral communication and presentational skills.
  • Have a commitment to continuing professional development and improving their professional practice.
  • Be committed to an equal opportunities policy for MAC.

Desirable

  • A working knowledge of a range of art-forms within the performing, visual or media arts
  • Have previous experience gained in a teaching, enabling or facilitating role within a learning environment.
