Purpose of the Role:
Global Technical: Science and Technology (S&T) provides technical leadership for Diageo's Whisky, Spirits, Beer, RTD and Non-Alc business globally.
The purpose of the role is to deliver analytical measurement and insight in order to improve Diageo's manufacturing processes and enable new ventures. This role carries out Brand Equity Compliance Analysis and Customer Concerns investigations on behalf of the Brand Owners to ensure Global Quality Standards are met for our products across our global production sites. The role also includes carrying out analytical investigations to support business activities across all our categories and functions.
The role will include extensive lab work using techniques such as NIR, GC, IC and HPLC. The role will also include support the development of new analytical methods in response to emerging risks. The role requires a proactive approach in interpretation of results to assist production sites in root cause problem solving, new product manufacturing and improvement projects. Sensory is a key aspect of the role and involves active participation in sensory panels, yearly accreditation and external proficiency schemes.
The role is based at the Analytical laboratory at the Diageo Technical Centre, Menstrie. The role holder will be expected to communicate with sites around the world and occasionally travel. This role reports to the Laboratory Senior Specialist- Analytical (Analytical Laboratory Manager).
Key Accountabilities
- Compliance - Operate and deliver processes that ensures the Health and Safety of our consumers, customers and employees. Work in a way that ensures compliance with our Diageo Code of Business conduct.
- Analytical Chemistry - Proficient and self-reliant in analytical chemistry techniques and results interpretation and method development. Understanding of Diageo production processes and how these link to analytical results
- Sensory - Basic understanding of sensory science. Ambition and drive to develop sensory leadership skills.
- Technical Development - Maintain knowledge of new developments in analysis. Be pro-active in apply developments to solving business problems.
- Project Delivery - Ability to manage and deliver small projects to deliver benefits to the business.
- Ownership - Ownership, pro-activity and judgement to drive solutions to completion.
- Technical Problem Solving - Apply technical knowledge and experience to lead solution to problems on production sites.
- Business Communication - Ability to build trusted relationships, communicate and influence effectively in order to drive the improvements suggested by the scientific data. Ability to use the scientific data to inspire change in a business context (awareness of business benefits, risks and obstacles).
Skills and Experience Required
- As a minimum at entry level the jobholder should be degree qualified in science or equivalent. Alternatively, a minimum of 5 years' experience in an analytical or food science laboratory.
- Analytical Chemistry and Sensory Experience - Good practical knowledge of operation, and maintenance of analytical techniques such as GC, HPLC, IC and NIR. Experience of Sensory
- Experience of Brewing and/ or Distilling and/ or Food and Drink Manufacture. Knowledge of the science and technology of brewing and distilling and associated processes.
- Clear thinker and communicator with good analytical and planning skills. Excellent communication skills - verbal & written, and an ability to influence internal and external stakeholders.
- Understanding customer and business needs, cultural awareness.
- Good and active network in analytical chemistry inside and outside Diageo in order to support the team as a global centre of excellence.
