Probationary Period

All new staff to the Trust will be subject to a standard 6 month probationary period, the details of which will duly follow in your contract of employment.

Agile and Flexible Working

All our staff will have a work base. However the Trust operates as an Agile Working Team therefore staff may be working from home on a regular basis as required by the service. However, occasionally travel around Warwickshire and into your base will be required so access to your own transport would be helpful.

Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join a successful joint NHS Knowledge and Library Services (KLS) team at the South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust and the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust.

The post holder will support the provision of Knowledge and Library services at George Eliot Hospital and South Warwickshire Hospitals, including line managing the Librarians and Senior Library Assistants on each site, and overseeing the patient information service at George Eliot Hospital and the Trusts' collections in the West Midlands Evidence Repository. The post holder will work closely with other KLS and Trust colleagues to support and promote evidence based health care and Knowledge Management.

The post is based at the Education Centre Library, Warwick Hospital, as well as one day a week at the William Harvey Library at George Eliot Hospital, Nuneaton. One day a week can also be based at home.

This post would be suitable for someone with experience of working in a professionally qualified post in an NHS or academic library. Flexibility in following up opportunities and the ability to supervise a team are also required.

The post is full time, but part time and/or job share arrangements will be considered.

Main duties of the job

The Knowledge and Library Services Manager is responsible for the delivery of Knowledge and Library Services (KLS) in support of evidence-based practice and knowledge management within George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust (GEH) and South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust (SWFT). The post holder will work with the KLS Lead to ensure that the KLS Team meets the requirements of key stakeholders at GEH and SWFT as well as Health Education England's (HEE) Quality and Improvement Outcomes Framework (QIOF) and successor documents. The post will be based at the Education Centre Library at Warwick Hospital and will also oversee the work of the William Harvey Library at the George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton where the KLS Lead is based.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Communication

Provide and receive complex information in the form of literature searches or service evaluations.

Contribute to business cases and service development plans for the KLS Team to key stakeholders at GEH, SWFT and NHSE.

Ensure that the KLS offer is effectively communicated to staff and students at GEH and SWFT.

Liaise with colleagues in other Trusts and organizations to contribute to regional and national programmes and projects.

Communicate effectively with KLS team members based at the GEH and SWFT sites.

Analytical and judgmental skills

Analyse and interpret complex facts and situations to ensure the KLS meets the information and knowledge needs of GEH and SWFT staff and students.

Analyse information resources to decide which ones should be subscribed to or invested in.

Survey KLS users to judge what services need to be offered.

Undertake complex literature searches as required, choosing the appropriate strategy and results in consultation with the requestor.

Planning and Organisational tasks

With the KLS Lead, plan and organize the broad range of the complex activities of the KLS across GEH and SWFT.

Plan KLS activities to implement the KLS strategic plan in collaboration with Education and Development colleagues and in the light of GEH and SWFT objectives and strategies

Ensure that the site libraries at GEH and SWFT have sufficient staffing and study resources on a day-to-day basis.

Ensure that the core KLS services of information skills training, literature searches inter-library loans meet KLS quality standards.

Plan and implement new ways of working within the KLS teams at GEH and SWFT.

Patient/client care

Ensure that the patient information leaflets system at GEH is maintained and kept current.

Policy and Service Development

Manage the KLS in line with the Education Strategy.

Harmonise KLS services and policies between GEH and SWFT.

Develop the Knowledge Management offer so that it meets the needs of GEH and SWFT.

Responsibility for financial/Physical resources

Manage the KLS Budget in GEH and SWFT.

Responsibility for Human Resources

Line manager for the Librarians and Library Assistants on the GEH and SWFT sites.

Deliver information skills training as required.

Contribute to the work of the wider Education team.

Responsibility for Information Resources

Direct responsibility for all library management systems such as Koha, KnowledgeShare, OpenAthens.

Ensure that Data Protection and Copyright law is followed in KLS

Create reports for NHSE National Statistical returns, annual reports and other KLS needs

Ensure that purchased resources are catalogued on the Koha library management system.

Responsibility for Research and Development

Maintain links with the Research Department to ensure that KLS meets the information needs of researchers at GEH and SWFT.

Survey KLS users annually to measure satisfaction and impact.

Publish KLS research articles as opportunity arises.

Write articles for publication and submits abstracts to relevant conferences

Ensure that the KLS team captures impact case studies and submits them to NHSE.

Special Requirements

The post holder will work across the GEH and SWFT sites but will be based at Warwick Hospital.

Use of computers: VDU & keyboard.

Manual handling of library stock.

Occasional carrying of heavy equipment.

Frequent requirement for concentration where the work pattern is unpredictable.

Occasional direct exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Degree or Postgraduate Diploma in Library & Information science or equivalent

Desirable criteria

  • Chartered member of CILIP

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience of working in a professionally qualified post in an NHS or Academic Library.
  • Experience of staff management, budget management, IT and resource management.
  • Experience of engaging with NHS staff to implement evidence-based practice

Desirable criteria

  • Involvement with cross organizational knowledge and library projects such as with NHS England.
