Job description

To provide welfare and pastoral care service to 16- and 17-years old Pre-University Summer School residential students appropriate to their age and background, to ensure their wellbeing whilst attending King's Summer Programmes. Leading a team of residential assistants, this role provides both - proactive care and support to all students during their stay as well as support to students in crisis. The postholder will be required to live in the designated student residence (Stamford Street Apartments) between 29 June and 20 July 2024.

Summer Programmes is a specialist creative business development unit in the School of International Education and Languages that designs, develops and delivers open and bespoke seasonal international education programmes in line with King's Education Strategy. Its portfolio includes flagship Undergraduate and Pre-university Summer Schools, customised undergraduate and postgraduate student programming for international partners, short courses and overseas programmes offered in face-to-face, blended and online modalities.

About King's Centre for International Education and Languages

King's Centre for International Education and Languages is a new, cross-cutting Centre designed to widen the educational reach of King's. It brings together three existing areas: King's Foundations, Summer Programmes, and King's Language Centre. This brings together international pathway provision, pre sessional programmes, pre-university summer courses, UG summer modules, UG language modules, bespoke language programmes for the community and our partners, and academic skills provision for all King's students. Each of these areas are well established, respected and recognised within and beyond the King's community. The Centre is focused on enabling collaboration between the three departments to further advance our work in promoting educational excellence and supporting and enhancing the student experience. The Centre has significant expertise in International Education and makes a significant contribution to the rich and diverse make-up of the King's student body.

Fixed term for 2 months

June-July, part time 17.5 h, Mon - Sun; postholder may be required to work additional hours during this period; this will be paid at the normal hourly rate.

Key responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety and security of the students in accommodation, alongside King's Security and Residences Reception teams
  • Ensure that Safeguarding policies and procedures are understood and followed by all Residential Assistants
  • Triage queries and concerns of all students, liaising with the appropriate staff to ensure resolution
  • Carry out regular accommodation checks to ensure that Residential Assistants monitor noise levels, litter, general tidiness, and damage, and follow all necessary residential systems and procedures. Work with the extended Summer team to ensure the highest possible student satisfaction levels are achieved by reviewing students' questionnaire results on a weekly basis and creating, logging, and implementing a weekly action plan to address feedback and suggestions given by students
  • Manage any emergency incidents arising during the night that may compromise the security and/or safety of the students and staff, following King's Summer Programmes escalation and incident policies
  • Complete incident reports and preliminary investigations, escalating findings to the residence management team and central welfare support
  • Provide a confidential space for students to speak about issues related to their wellbeing
  • Offer support to residential assistants when incidents relating to students occur, including disruptive behaviour and those related to alcohol or substance misuse
  • Raise any health and safety issues regarding student welfare and the breaching of any welfare policies to the specified member of College staff
  • Lead the training programme for the Residential Assistants team
  • Organise the Residential Assistants' rota
  • Lead and manage a team of Residential Assistants competently, confidently, and professionally, monitoring their performance and providing support, guidance, and training where necessary
  • Ensure Health & Safety policies, and procedures along with applicable risk assessments are being adhered to, for students and staff to be always safe
  • Review leaflets, posters, contact cards; ensure they are kept up to date and request orders as needed to keep stock replenished
  • Support the residential assistants to mediate student disputes, where appropriate and safe to do so, to ensure a culture of mutual respect is maintained
  • Plan for student arrivals in the King's residences
  • Maintaining confidentiality, only discussing relevant details with staff that have been assigned to manage a case
  • Develop and maintain strong interpersonal relationships with the Residential Assistants to ensure good teamwork and a strong, supported work culture
  • Build strong relationship with the residence management team, reception staff, central student support and security/night teams
  • Attend ad-hoc meetings to discuss current welfare and discipline cases

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential Criteria

  1. Must be able to live in the student accommodation during operational delivery (29 June - 20 July 2024)
  2. Experience in working with young adults
  3. Demonstrable experience of managing and escalating safeguarding concerns and overseeing the safeguarding activities of others (particularly with young adults)
  4. Experience in managing staff
  5. Experience of delivering training, including safeguarding training
  6. Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced environment
  7. A strong awareness of Health & Safety (specifically as it relates to residential accommodation)
  8. Strong and demonstrable organisation skills
  9. Ability to solve issues and problems with/between staff and students
  10. Clear and accurate communication skills both written and verbal
  11. Able to plan own workload, work to tight deadlines and manage multiple projects, reprioritising or adapting as necessary
  12. Excellent attention to detail and record keeping
  13. Experience working in a summer school or similar environment

Desirable Criteria

  1. Experience of working with students living in a residential environment
  2. Experience in dealing with international students
  3. First Aid and Mental Health First Aid training

Training will be provided to the successful candidate.
