Summary and purpose of position:

The IT Networks Team Lead manages the network engineer team, leading the management and support of Wincanton's network systems. With responsibility for the design, installation, maintenance, support, availability and operational security of the Wincanton Network. Including core DC networks, security infrastructure, WAN, site LANs/WLANs and telephony as well as 3rd party managed services.
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate both technical and managerial capabilities. Working as a member of the network team as principal network engineer to lead design, documentation, implementation and support activities. And, providing effective line management of the network team, developing and mentoring direct reports, identifying skills and resource gap and efficiently managing and planning resource allocation in support of Wincanton's operational BAU and project objectives.

Duties and responsibilities:

• Manages Incidents, Service Requests and Project tasks to resolution against defined SLAs and OLAs
• Establishes and controls network systems access and security
• Prepares and maintains documentation of network configurations and cabling layouts
• Maintains the accuracy and integrity of network configuration items
• Monitors and maintains network stability, checks systems in order to optimize performance and to initiate recovery action after system failures
• Performs appropriate and timely escalation of incidents to suppliers and manages (suppliers) to incident resolution
• Manages the delivery of network & telephony managed services, develops and establishes strong relationships with service providers and suppliers
• Maintains the integrity and supportability of Wincanton's network, including planning and managing SW/Firmware updates across the estate
• Manages performance, capacity monitoring and event management of network infrastructure components
• Performs on site audits of equipment, documenting findings, improvements and risks
• Manage network related project activities, including day to day coordination of suppliers, managing supplier delivery against requirements
• Liaises with and manages communications to customers and internal support groups for updates on impacts to the network, incident resolution, project delivery progress, planned maintenance, etc.
• Manages the network resource plan, effectively plans network engineer resource allocation in support of BAU and Project activities. Highlights resourcing issues as soon as possible and participates in prioritisation planning activities
• Designs and implements network solutions from an agreed set of technologies, services and capabilities
• Supports the Wincanton Architecture team in the design and delivery of new services and capabilities, manages roadmaps, makes recommendations on new capabilities and technologies
• Forms part of an on-call rota, providing out of hours support and/or escalation for critical incidents
• Provides Management through effective objective setting, delegation, and communication. Conducts meetings to ensure that personnel are well informed of changes in programs, policies, and procedures
• Trains, directs, and coordinates network personnel. Mentors and supports as needed
• Conducts performance appraisals as assigned. Provides measurable feedback to staff and suggestions for improved performance. Formulates and implements employee corrective actions as needed

Typical Outputs:

• Maintenance schedules and timetable of planned maintenance changes
• Technical design documentation for all new sites and solutions
• Accurate and current network documentation for all sites and data centers
• Accurate configuration information for all assets and sites maintained in ServiceNow
• Resource plan for IT networks team
• Reporting on team delivery against KPIs / OLAs & SLAs
• Reporting and analysis on network related major incidents
• Staff development and performance reviews
• Roadmaps for network technologies and services

Experience, skills and attributes:

• ITIL v3 or v4
• Cisco CCNP certified or equivalent experience working with Voice, Data and Security Technologies
• WAN and routing protocols - ADSL, MPLS, BGP, OSPF
• Cisco IOS, Routers and switches (including VLANS, Trunking, QoS, spanning tree)
• Cisco Meraki technologies (LAN, WLAN, SD-WAN, MX)
• Network Management Systems
• Protocols - TCP/IP, NLB, DNS, DHCP & SNMP
• Check Point Firewalls
• VPN Technologies - Site to and Site and Remote Access VPN
• LAN Configuration/management and NAC
• NAT and PAT
• Team Leadership/management experience
• Experienced in managing suppliers, support agencies and service providers
• Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities
• Experience of working in project environments and delivering work packages
• Proven ability to nurture and mentor staff
• Able to conduct research into issues and products as required
• Ability to prioritise and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment and make sound decisions in emergency situations
• Keen attention to detail with ability to make sound and logical judgments
• Strong customer service orientation
• Ability to articulate technical ideas and concepts to non-technical colleagues
