Job Title: IoT Subject Matter Expert (SME)

Department: Engineering

Location: London

Reports To: Director of Engineering

Role Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced IoT Subject Matter Expert to lead our digital transformation initiatives. In this role, you will serve as the primary authority on IoT architecture, hardware selection, connectivity protocols, and edge-to-cloud integration. You will bridge the gap between operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT), ensuring our solutions are scalable, secure, and commercially viable.

The IoT Subject Matter Expert role is essential to ensure the accuracy and integrity of asset data (up to 13,000 devices) during the complex project close-out and handover phase. The role's primary function is to enforce data structure, manage the consolidation of asset registers, and de-risk the building's commissioning and operational handover by establishing and maintaining a single, reliable source of truth. The ideal candidate does not just understand how to build a connected device; they understand how to build a connected ecosystem that drives business value.

• Evaluate and select appropriate hardware, sensors, microcontrollers, and communication modules based on power, cost, and environmental constraints.

• Design scalable cloud integration strategies using platforms like AWS IoT Core or Azure IoT Hub.

2. Implementation & Development

• Oversee the deployment of edge computing solutions to process data closer to the source (latency and bandwidth optimization).

• Define and enforce standard communication protocols (e.g., MQTT, CoAP, LoRaWAN, Zigbee, BLE) across the ecosystem.

• Collaborate with firmware engineers and backend developers to ensure seamless data ingestion and visualization.

• Troubleshoot complex connectivity issues in field deployments.

3. Security & Compliance

• Champion "Security by Design" principles, ensuring robust encryption (TLS/SSL), device provisioning, and identity management (PKI).

• Ensure all IoT solutions comply with relevant data privacy regulations (GDPR, CCPA) and industry standards

4. Leadership & Mentorship

• Act as the technical liaison between the engineering team and non-technical stakeholders (Product Management, Sales).

• Mentor junior engineers and data scientists on IoT best practices.

• Manage relationships with third-party vendors, chip manufacturers, and connectivity providers.

Competencies

• Essential.

• A high degree of competence in the management of large data sets in spreadsheets.

• High level knowledge of building control systems (BMS, LMS, EMS, PMS, security controls, fire systems, IoT connected devices)

• High level knowledge of building services (HVAC, Electrical distribution, plumbing)

• Strong numeracy skills

• Strong communication skills

• Strong organisational skills

• Desirable.

• An engineering qualification (BEng, BSc, HND) or equivalent experience

• Expereince of installing or operating electrical or control systems
