Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for an Insurance manager to join our growing team.

Base location is flexible - with some travel required.

As an Insurance Manager you will l ead the delivery of an effective insurance service for multiple SBUs including Rail, Power T&D, Asset & Technology Solutions and BB Living Places in accordance with the BB Insurance Strategy.

You will provide strategic and technical insurance related input & guidance on the terms of agreements associated with construction projects. Engage with commercial teams in a positive, thoughtful way acknowledging the commercial realities of tendering but balancing these against the need to protect the SBU and the Group's insurance programme.

What you'll be doing

  • Be recognised as the insurance expert for relevant SBU's. As part of this take responsibility for the provision of timely advice and support to Project and Commercial leads on all insurance and risk aspects of contract tenders, including any exposure to uninsured risk. Highlight any "red line" insurance requirements on specific tenders and engage creatively with bid team colleagues to propose potential mitigations. Ensure insurance risks are appropriately highlighted in Gated Lifecyle approval papers
  • Oversee all claims within the SBUs and, as appropriate, lead or be involved in the management and investigation of major claims typically over £50k and incidents ensuring procedures are being followed and relevant documentation is being issued to insurers on time and to the required standard.
  • Responsible for ensuring settlement of major claims within framework set out in Delegations of Authority. To monitor the settlement of insurance claims (settled by insurers) in accordance with procedures and to work with the UK Head of Insurance to ensure that the BB Group insurance programme (placed centrally) meets all the SBUs requirements.
  • Use professional expertise to determine requirements for project specific insurance and manage the procurement process to ensure best value is achieved and give advice on commercial rates to be used during pricing tenders.
  • Advise SBUs in relation to terms of "owner-controlled insurance programmes" (OCIPS).
  • Analyse insurance claims, identifies trends, risks and opportunities and reports findings.
  • Spread good practice /lessons learnt arising out of property damage claims and site surveys
  • Advise on group cover
  • Build effective working relationships with external insurance brokers and service providers.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of developments, regulation and thinking in insurance within the construction sector and elsewhere in order to bring best practice into Balfour Beatty.
  • Lead, develop and coach individuals to build high performing teams and creates a pipeline of talent

  • Develop and deliver training, procedures, systems and forms as appropriate to improve knowledge and awareness of insurable risks and encourage a mature risk management culture.

Who we're looking for

The following qualities/experience are essential:

  • Ability to work autonomously without day-to-day supervision.
  • Has a proven track record as an insurance professional in a senior managerial capacity.
  • Previous experience of working as part of, and leading, a team demonstrating the ability to motivate, develop and guide the performance of others.
  • Experience in handling major insurance claims from start to finish
  • Has an ability to gather, analyse and evaluate facts
  • Pays attention to detail and sees things through to completion
  • Can deliver reports orally and written in an objective and persuasive manner
  • Has good interpersonal and communication skills and acts in an independent and professional manner with the ability to influence others including senior management.
  • Is a self-starter who manages their own time and seeks to add value to their function
  • Able to command respect across the business and within the insurance team
  • Is good at building relationships and can influence effectively.
  • Excellent IT skills.

The following qualities/experience are desirable

  • The individual will be qualified to ACII
  • Has knowledge of the construction industry or experience within a project-based organisation
