The Role

North Somerset Council has an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual who has a bachelors degree (BEng or MEng) in Civil Engineering with minimum 2yrs experience in relevant Civil/Structural Engineering discipline and a Graduate member of the ICE or IStructE working towards Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

This role is also open to the individuals who are educated to a minimum HNC level (NVQ level 4) or HND (NVQ level 5) with 5-10years of experience in Civil/Structural engineering discipline and construction industry.

North Somerset Council is a forward-thinking authority using the latest Highway Structures maintenance techniques to manage its structural assets and you will play a key role in this essential function. The Highway Structures Team is responsible for the management of bridges, retaining walls, subways, road safety barriers and other structures.

In this role, you will help the teams to deliver annual capital and revenue maintenance projects, as well as providing support to the Team Manager on various design, construction and maintenance duties.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare calculations, drawings, details, works specifications and reports in accordance with current codes and standards for a wide range of structures and materials.
  • Liaison with statutory authorities, external design consultants and contractors.
  • Developing skills in the use of the latest design software e.g. MasterSeries.
  • Establish and maintain technical file systems, as well as manage computer databases, providing administrative support as needed.
  • Assisting in design reviews and verification checks
  • Undertaking site visits, inspections and surveys.
  • Engage in continuous professional development (CPD) to uphold a high level of discipline knowledge and awareness.
  • Production of construction drawings and works specifications using AutoCAD.

Valid driving licence, or be able to provide alternative, suitable method of travel is an essential condition for this role.

This position is currently based at our Castlewood offices in Clevedon. Please be advised that this office will be closed by 2025. Consultation is currently underway to determine the new location for colleagues based in Castlewood. This will be at Weston-super-Mare or within North Somerset.

About You

We are looking for an individual who is enthusiastic about Civil/Structural engineering design and construction and who possesses the following skills and experience:

Essential Criteria:

  • The post holder should be educated to a minimum BEng or MEng in Civil Engineering or minimum HNC level (NVQ level 4) or HND (NVQ level 5) with significant years of experience in Civil/Structural engineering discipline.
  • Familiarity with and understanding of relevant industry Codes and Standards (Eurocodes), references, as well as procedures and practices of verification and validation applicable to civil engineering design, construction and structural assessments.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Software experience - AutoCAD
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft office applications

Desirable Criteria:

  • Understanding of NEC3 or NEC4 contract principles.
  • Experience in the management of highway structures/assets using an electronic asset management systems such as AMX or equivalent.
