The Transpennine Route Upgrade is a major investment to be made in the railway between York and Manchester via Leeds and Huddersfield. TRU is a multi-billion-pound, transformative, long-term railway infrastructure programme that will improve connectivity in the North. It will support economic growth in the North and deliver real benefits for passengers and communities along this pivotal rail artery.

We have an exciting opportunity to join our dynamic team in Huddersfield as a Civils Head of Temporary Works working on the construction phase of this prestigious scheme. The purpose of this role is to lead and manage the team of TW design managers and designers and matrix temporary works coordinators to deliver the temporary works design solutions required to successfully deliver the project.

Your mission

  • Ensure Temporary Works design services to the project are effectively managed and appropriate design workload is allocated.
  • Ensure efficient allocation of design workload to design team.
  • Ensure project team specific design work is carried out in accordance with BAM UK&I Divisional and Segment level procedures.
  • Ensure effective collaboration for all TW related items are co-ordinated with other participants within the project, including Network Rail
  • Ensure all designs are, where highlighted, carried out in accordance with Network Rail standards and assurance process.
  • Ensure all areas within the project have suitable and adequate TWC cover to manage site specific their duties in accordance with BS:5975,
  • Liaise with internal delivery teams and other project participant teams with respect to design requirements and collaborative working practices.
  • Ensure that initial cost estimates are provided for all designs prior to commercial instruction.
  • Ensure design outputs are in accordance with current standards and codes including calculations, design risk assessments and 2D/3D models.
  • Ensure all designs are carried out in accordance with CDM requirements and adopting the safe by design approach.
  • Ensure the design team has resource and ability to internally assure design work, CAT I checks.
  • Ensure, with co-ordination, that BAM UK&I Head office team have resources to assure project designs at CAT II level.
  • The design team are also to be able to check CATIII external designers work for applicable design briefs.
  • Ensure all department staff participate in the annual PDR process.

Who are we looking for?

  • Degree, HND in Civil/Structural Engineering or equivalent
  • CSCS Level - Academically or Professionally Qualified Person/Manager
  • Chartered membership of an appropriate professional body.
  • Specialist Technical or Managerial Knowledge, aligned to Temporary Works
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the construction industry.
  • Successful experience and performance at a senior position
  • Must be able to demonstrate experience of leadership and management capabilities
  • Must be excellent communicator and able to work in an open plan multidisciplinary environment
  • Must be able to demonstrate strong collaborative behaviours
  • Experience working on Projects based on Collaborative forms of Contracts
  • Temporary works design and/construction methodology experience
  • Have currently/previously been appointed as a Temporary Works Coordinator
  • Able to assess designs for safe, sustainable, and efficient construction.
  • Experience of leading a geographically diverse team.
  • Have been responsible for and managing TWs procedures and processes (or equivalent)
  • Have had experience in developing a strategy and implementing it within in an organisation
  • Experience working on multi-disciplinary projects
