Location: North of Tyne & Gateshead

Salary: £36,000

Thanks for your initial interest in a career in our Diabetic Eye Screening programme, we appreciate that not many people know what the role of a Retinal Grader is, but hopefully throughout your application process you'll have a better understanding.

So, what is Diabetic Eye Screening? Some people with diabetes develop serious complications with their eyes, called diabetic retinopathy. If they don't get this treated properly, it can lead to sight loss. Diabetic eye screening is a test to check for eye problems caused by diabetes. The eye screening test can find eye problems before sight is affected. Pictures are taken of the back of the eyes to check for any changes.

Experience in a caring environment or hospital background is preferable but not necessary, our Graders have come from all walks of life. If you are good with people and want to make a difference this could be the career for you. Starting as a screener you will be trained on the job and will be given all the skills and knowledge to complete your Health Screener Diploma. Once trained there are a variety of opportunities to progress your career in Diabetic Eye Screening with salaries up to 45k:

Who are we looking for?

  • Compassionate individuals who are empathetic towards the requirements of each individual patient
  • Although we will provide full training, we are looking for individuals who are able to take detailed/up close pictures of the eye and remain composed
  • People who consider themselves adaptable and possess the ability to think quickly and resolve problems
  • Flexible in their working week as occasional evening and weekend work may be required and a commitment to completing their Health Screener Diploma in the required timescale
  • Those looking for a career in a care profession in their next position
  • Individuals who enjoy working with the public, are caring and have an in built need to help others
  • People who take pride in the level of customer service they offer
  • Full driving licence and access to a car for travel to and from clinics

Key duties of a Grader

  • Undertake all relevant units of the level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners; carry out the on-line EQA grading tests each month; attend and fully participate in the MDT meetings and adopt a commitment to personal continuous learning and development
  • Provide first, second full disease and arbitration grading (as signed off by the Clinical Lead) in accordance with NDESP guidance.
  • Become an expert level user of Spectra
  • Adopt a "problem solving approach" and use your best judgement and analysis to challenges in your day-to-day operations. Seek assistance from where appropriate eg: Support Desk, Line Manager, and other Senior Graders
  • Complete the Information Governance Training and Compliance Test as required by management and ensure that patient data is kept confidential and secure at all times
  • Participate in Proficiency Assessments, for example, of grading competency; participate in feedback meetings to identify areas for improvement and work to make improvements in performance as required
  • Read, understand and follow all of the protocols relevant to the role. Ensuring at least a quarterly review to ensure continued awareness and compliance
  • Support effective communication with other members of the team through regular access to your e-mail system and pick up phone messages throughout the day
