Salary:£74,600 - £112,000 + car / car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

SSEN Transmission is at the heart of the just transition to net zero in the UK. In the coming years, our network will be pivotal in connecting and transporting the power needed to decarbonise the UK's electricity network and in doing so power the UK's net zero ambition. Our business is rapidly growing, to deliver the largest investment package that Scotland's electricity system has ever seen, with a projected investment programme of over £20bn in the next 10 years.

As Head of Strategic System Planning at SSEN Transmission, you will play a critical role in shaping the strategic planning of the SSEN Transmission network at a pivotal time in the energy industry. You will develop our strategic network plan which delivers a transmission system compliant with technical standards, industry codes and regulatory requirements, and with capability for the security and continuity of supply for a range of energy futures and viable operating conditions. You will recommend the strategic network development plan and necessary capital investment to the SSEN Transmission Executive Committee. This role will report to our Director of Strategic Energy Planning sitting in the Business Planning and Commercial directorate.

The responsibilities of the Head of Strategic System Planning include:

- Support and develop a team of specialist power system engineers and energy systems and data analytics modellers to undertake continual assessment of the current and planned transmission system capabilities, to robustly define network requirements and develop strategic network plans and capital investment recommendations.

- Assess changing short and long-term network conditions through building and maintaining an electrical model of the transmission system and undertaking system studies, ensuring capability to accommodate users' requirements, and create robust recommendations for strategic options assessment.

- Lead on Energy System Modelling, through building and maintaining a suitable energy system model to inform robust and evidence-based electricity transmission system requirements analysis.

- Act as a key advisor to the SSEN Transmission Executive Committee to make recommendations for economic, efficient and coordinated capital investment for area and strategic network plans, supported by rigorous commercial business cases, to meet current and future transmission system requirements.

- Work effectively with cross functional specialists across SSEN Transmission (engineering, environment, consent, communities) to harness their expertise in developing and assessing strategic options for network development, and externally represent SSEN Transmission in industry governance processes (including Government, Ofgem, the Electricity System Operator, network companies and other key stakeholders) for capital investment programmes.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

- In-depth knowledge and awareness of the Regulatory and Legislative obligations applicable to a Regulated Electricity Network Owner, combined with understanding of SSEN Transmission's Licence Obligations and Industry Codes/Standards for design of and connections to the transmission network.

- A clear understanding of requirements for technical studies associated with transmission and interconnected networks, including power flow analysis, fault level studies, voltage and thermal capability, system stability, fast switching studies, harmonic and power quality analysis.

- Effective ability to assess markets and engage in policy development with the ability to clearly articulate and present strategic and technical content to Board level, and Ofgem for investment decisions.

- Demonstrable ability to motivate, build, and direct a strong, technical team, with many objectives over varying timescales, and manage key stakeholders.

- Minimum Degree qualified in electrical engineering discipline. Advanced Qualification (PhD) and Chartered Engineer status preferred.
