A little more about your role...
Provide clear, supportive strategic, technical and operational leadership for the Project Engineering discipline, ensuring engineering delivery is technically excellent, well-governed, commercially sound and aligned with WSP best practice (BMS, SHEQ and internal procedures). Lead in a way that is fair, transparent and inclusive, creating conditions for all colleagues to do their best work.
Lead, mentor and develop Project Engineering Managers and the wider engineering community so that work is consistently high-quality, well-coordinated, properly resourced and delivered efficiently across all phases (feasibility, concept, FEED, detailed design and execution).
Create meaningful opportunities for professional growth and model healthy work-life balance. Lead high-profile projects and help grow the business by engaging clients, contributing to bids and building long-term partnerships.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Governance
- Provide ethical, transparent and supportive technical leadership that empowers diverse teams and reflects WSP's Guiding Principles.
- Oversee the Project Engineering Managers community, setting clear expectations and consistently applying robust engineering governance across projects.
- Maintain and continuously improve processes and the engineering governance framework (e.g., design reviews; checking and approval workflows; change management; quality assurance).
- Identify skills gaps and lead fair, inclusive recruitment, training and succession planning to build a balanced pipeline of talent.
Project Delivery Oversight
- Ensure projects are properly scoped, resourced, planned and controlled from an engineering perspective, with clear quality standards and accountable ownership.
- Coach and support Project Engineering Managers to deliver effectively across feasibility, concept, FEED, detailed design and execution.
- Enable efficient coordination between engineering disciplines, client teams and stakeholders, using collaborative digital tools and clear communication routines.
- Act as an escalation point for complex technical and delivery challenges, facilitating balanced, risk-aware decisions.
Technical Excellence & Innovation
- Champion structured development and ensure equitable access to stretch opportunities for all team members.
- Champion technical excellence, innovation and continuous improvement, encouraging experimentation and learnings from success and failure.
- Promote adoption of best practice, digital delivery and structured lessons-learned across the engineering lifecycle.
- Drive value engineering, design optimisation and risk reduction across major workstreams, balancing innovation with safety and assurance.
Commercial & Strategic Contribution
- Support bid preparation, pricing strategy and scope definition for tenders and proposals, ensuring clarity of assumptions and deliverables.
- Contribute to business planning, market positioning and capability development for the engineering function.
- Partner with project managers to manage engineering budget, schedule and risk exposure, and to communicate trade-offs clearly to stakeholders.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate...
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent professional registration (or demonstrable equivalent experience with commitment to attain).
- Substantial experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams on complex projects (Energy, Power, Industrial or similar).
- Proven ability to lead, mentor and develop engineering managers and senior engineers, with evidence of inclusive people leadership.
- Strong understanding of engineering governance, design assurance and project lifecycle management, including risk and change control.
- Track record of managing multidisciplinary technical delivery and building effective interfaces with internal teams and clients.
- Commercial awareness with experience contributing to bids, pricing and project strategy, including balancing value, risk and quality.
Desirable Attributes
- Experience in value engineering, FEED studies and first-of-a-kind or high-complexity projects.
- Experience leading geographically distributed teams and effective remote/hybrid collaboration.
- Strong communication, facilitation and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to align diverse views and make balanced decisions.
