The Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP) are looking for a Head of Programmes to join our Programmes team. The role will be reporting to the Executive Director.
Location: E2, near Bethnal Green (London). Hybrid, minimum 3 days in the office.
Salary: £75,000 - £80,000 per annum + company benefits. Permanent contract.
Hours: 37.5 hours per week (full-time), Monday to Friday.
The role
ETP (The Ethical Tea Partnership) is seeking a Head of Programmes to lead in the vision, design, build, implementation, monitoring and reporting on all of the programmatic work that ETP undertakes in our 6 focus countries. This London based role will strengthen and optimise the critical programme pillar of ETP's strategy, through programmes which are well managed, and that deliver on their expected outcomes, contributing to ETP's organisational goals and delivering for those who work in the tea sector. The programmes will focus on a core set of interventions that in combination will address the causes that we champion - namely, the reduction of poverty, arresting deforestation, promoting access to services and lastly but crucially addressing Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence (HREDD) in the tea supply chain. As a membership-based institution ETP has strong and growing partnerships with our members and other key stakeholders along the supply chain.
The successful candidate will have diverse combination of responsibilities: strengthening our programme management and its systems to ensure high-quality and efficient delivery in line with agreed objectives; responding to member companies' requests and proposals; institutionalising a partnership orientated programming approach; building and leading a diverse staff team; nurturing a culture of monitoring, evaluation, learning and impact. As part of the 5 people ETP Leadership Team (LT) the post holder oversees all key programmatic partnerships and also contributes to fundraising strategies with the Head of Fundraising. The Head of Programmes acts as a key resource to the Board of Directors' Programmatic Commitments Committee.
The individual will also play a leading role in setting the culture of the organisation and modelling ETP's values. ETP aims to be a positive, driven, open-minded, intellectually curious, and collaborative organisation but one that is not satisfied with the status quo. With a shared responsibility for ETP's organisational capability, this role ensures that ETP continues to evolve according to its strategic direction and intent.
Direct Reports - 4 direct reports in the UK and oversight of 6 regional programme managers
Responsibilities
Programme strategy, programme oversight, planning, implementation and evaluation
- Lead the definition of the overall programme strategy, taking into account input from the field and ETP member companies' priorities.
- Support the in-country teams with project management and priority management, acting as back up when needed.
- Manage relationships with a myriad of project stakeholders, including private sector partners, NGOs and government.
- Responsible for ensuring each programme has well-embedded and effective interventions. Support the Insights (M&E) Lead to achieve this.
- Accountable for defining ETP's approach to gender in tea, wages and incomes in tea, and environmental sustainability in tea - engaging technical expertise from the programme mangers (Livelihoods and Gender Lead and the Environment and Climate Lead specialists)
- In collaboration with Finance, be responsible for programme budgets, validation and controls and reviewing and approving donor reporting.
- Provide access to relevant programme evidence to enable the Communications team to create content that demonstrates the impact of ETP's work.
- Ensure risks to delivery, impact and financial performance are understood and well managed, reporting to the Programme Commitment Committee as appropriate.
- Contribute to wider organisational activities, such as developing policy statements, identifying innovative business models, shared learning objectives, design and delivery of large meetings and events.
- Oversee and manage the ETP membership data bank. ETP house some of the most in-depth data streams from the tea industry and this remains highly valuable to ensure programming integrity and planning.
- Organisational shared learning. - The Head of Programmes will lead on the global calls and sharing outcomes from programmes across the organisation. This is co-lead with Head of Communication
- Drive organisational impact reporting - the Head of Programmes will oversee the organisational framework.
- HREDD and the work surrounding certification are critical to our communications, programming and member's support. The Head of Programmes will line manage this role within ETP.
- Support the development of country workplans; this entails working with Regional Directors, Country Managers and regional teams on planning and conceptualising realistic and achievable country plans that aligns with ETP strategy and ensuring these plans are delivered within the agreed timeline and within budget.
Proposal development / funding diversification
- In collaboration with the Head of Fundraising and programme and country teams, assess and review funding opportunities on a quarterly basis.
Management
- Oversee the resources, capability and structure of the programmes team including line management and coaching of relevant programme staff and ensure delivery of individual plans and yearly objectives. ETP employs a combination of staff (in UK and in tea-region countries) and programme contractors.
- Develop a learning culture and embed this across the programmes team.
- Share responsibility for overall organisational success.
Required skills
Essential:
- Have the right to work in the UK and reside within a commutable distance to our London office in Bethnal Green.
- Minimum of 10-year experience in programme management, including management of large portfolio of varied initiatives.
- Experience on working on supply chain agricultural commodity programmes.
- Proven experience of delivering strategic leadership to a diverse high performing team delivering a shared vision, including ability to drive the planning of the team and ensuring deadlines are met.
- Knowledge of human rights-based approach to impact delivery (and in a supply chain setting would be an advantage).
- Knowledge of corporate social and environmental sustainability, understanding of the concept of Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence, and understanding of certification schemes such as Rainforest Alliance, and Fairtrade.
- Expertise with design and roll out of project/programme management frameworks, and monitoring, evaluation, and learning.
- Experienced senior manager - building, developing, and leading diverse and high performing teams.
- Track record of building relationships, and partnering with a wide range of organisations, including with institutional donors, funders, the private sector, international NGOs, local CSOs to leverage impact, improve delivery and raise funds.
- Experience working on global projects and with people from different backgrounds and cultures and prepared to travel overseas.
- Open communication style - proactively contributing to ETP's progress.
