Head of Patient & Public Engagement

This job is brought to you by Jobs/Redefined, the UK's leading over-50s age inclusive jobs board.

Job Description

Marie Curie is the UK's leading palliative and end-of-life care charity. We are the largest non-NHS provider of palliative and end-of-life care in the UK, and the only provider across all 4 nations. We specialise in the provision of UK wide community nursing and hospice care, both inpatient and outpatient, whilst providing information and support on all aspects of terminal illness, dying, death, and bereavement. Our leading research pushes the boundaries of what we know about good end-of-life, and our campaigns fight for a world where everyone gets to have the best possible quality of life while living with an illness, they're likely to die from.

The care and support we provide is highly valued by the people we care for and their loved ones, but at present we are only reaching around 10% of dying people at the end of life. Right now, one in four people in the UK with a terminal illness, do not get the care or support they deserve at the end of their lives.

We want a different society than the one we live in now. Our mission for the next five years is to close the gap in the number of people missing out on what they need at the end-of-life, through 3 ways:

  • Growing and transforming our direct care and support
  • Delivering more practical information and support
  • Leading in shaping the end-of-life experience

Your role in our mission:

As Head of Patient & Public Engagement, you will be responsible for the leadership, development and co-ordination of patient experience and public engagement activities across the charity. You will draw on your health and social care background to influence the development and delivery of services that improve the experience of patients, families, and our wider communities.

As a senior manager and lead for patient and public engagement, you will act as the principal adviser on these and related issues to the Executive Team in particular the Clinical Executive Team, Place Based Leadership Teams, managers and staff.

Additionally, you will contribute to the development of the charity and its continual improvement in operational and financial performance, with specific responsibility for the patient and public engagement strategy. This role will also see you ensure that data and intelligence gathered from community engagement and patient and carer experience is presented alongside other key quality and safety metrics, ensuring the data is utilised by key stakeholders to provide assurance, improve performance and quality, and drive service innovation that improve the experience of everyone affected by dying, death and bereavement.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the co-development and delivery of the charity Patient and Community Involvement and Engagement Strategy, ensuring alignment with the one plan.
  • Have overall responsibility for patient and carer experience and feedback, across the charity.
  • Have overall responsibility for patient and public engagement as part of service improvement and development.
  • Develop and lead a comprehensive work plan to ensure that the organisation is involving patients, carers, and the public by systematically collecting, collating, and reporting data on their experience, to support quality and service improvement and innovation.
  • Provide leadership in exploring different methodologies for the systematic capturing of feedback experience from patients, carers, and the public.
  • Lead and advise the charity on emerging and changing priorities in patient and carer experience, within health and social care settings, networking with key strategic stakeholders internal and external to the charity.
  • Work with other teams within the organisation, in particular the research and policy team, to ensure that patient, carer, and public experience, can inform service planning and delivery.
  • Provide on-going evidence of compliance with statutory requirements in relation to complaints management and standards relating to patient and carer feedback, public engagement, and the provision of evidence of compliance with commissioned requirements for patient and carer experience locally and nationally.
  • Identify, adapt and bring examples of best practice in patient and public engagement from other voluntary NHS and non-NHS and public sector organisations; leading the successful implementation in Marie Cuire to deliver measurable improvements in patient experience.
  • Analyse the charities strategic and operational plans and translate these needs into the provision of systematic engagement policy, process, and systems
  • To make judgements with complainants and the Parliamentary Health Service Ombudsman involving highly complex facts or situations, which require the analysis, interpretation, and comparison of a range of options
  • To set up systems to monitor the level of customer engagement. Plan and deliver seminars and training for staff on patient and public engagement.

What we are looking for:

Extensive knowledge and experience of Health and Social Care with an understanding of policies and drivers affecting the provision of health & social care

Significant knowledge of methods, systems and processes for obtaining and understanding patient, carer and public engagement and experience, and its role in business development

Understanding of governance across a health or social care setting

Expert knowledge of patient/public involvement and engagement approaches

strong lateral thinker with highly developed communication skills and confidence to communicate at all levels of the organisation, including on issues that may be complex or contentious in nature

Strategic thinker with highly effective influencing skills, able to network at a senior level both internal to and external to the organisation.

What's in it for you?

  • Salary £60,000 - £65,000 per annum
  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Marie Curie Group Personal Pension Scheme
  • Season ticket loan
  • Loan schemes for bikes; computers and satellite navigation systems
