The South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre is an established surgical hub situated on the Epsom Hospital site. The Centre has a core workforce which is completely committed to the delivery of excellent treatment for patients undergoing elective surgery.
The Centre comprises six theatres which run six days a week, operating on approximately 6,000 patients per year, an Outpatients' service and Pre-Assessment, which is undertaken digitally. Patients recover, post-surgery, in a Post Anaesthetic Care Unit and are then discharged home or taken to the ward for further care, if needed.
SWLEOC is a partnership organisation, made up of four trusts: Epsom and St Helier, St Georges, Kingston and Croydon. Patients come for surgery from across South West London and Surrey, but there are also many patients who come from a wider catchment area.
We have a position of Head of Nursing to fill in a secondment capacity for a period of six months, Band 8b. We are looking to recruit an experienced senior nurse who will be a confident leader to work with all the nursing teams, bringing cohesion and support to all departments so that the highest standards of patient care can be maintained.
The successful candidate will work with the Senior Leadership Team, representing nursing and supporting ongoing transformation work within the Centre. The candidate will also have regular one to one meetings with the Chief Nurse of Epsom and St Helier.

Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse - RGN Adult Branch
- Post graduate qualification courses or portfolio of evidence demonstrating comprehensive career development
- Post graduate qualification training in management and leadership skills.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Proven track record of developing nursing practice
- Evidence of training in first line management and leadership e.g. disciplinary/ grievance, recruitment and selection, change management.

Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial experience working clinically within surgical specialty.
- Substantial post qualification experience as Matron/Unit Manager or equivalent, managing nursing teams.
- Demonstrable previous success in leading and delivering change and performance by engaging clinical teams in strategic direction and delivery plans, establishing clear work priorities with them, delegating effectively, ensuring a capability to deliver, monitoring performance and giving feedback
- Proven ability to analyse complex problems and to develop and successfully implement practical and workable solutions to address them.
- Ability to think and plan strategically, tactically, and creatively, and to prioritise work programs in the face of competing demands.
- Knowledge and ability to implement principles of clinical governance including audit, risk management, supervision, clinical effectiveness, continuing professional development, quality standards and outcomes
- Experience of managing and configuring budgets and the skills to monitor and assess financial information.
- Previous experience of successfully delivering national and local infection control policies and procedures.
- Ability to collaborate constructively with internal and external partners to create the conditions for successful partnership working.

- Evidence of high levels of expertise in clinical care and management of people, with complex co-morbidities, long-term conditions, and diverse social needs, and of delivering rehabilitation, continuing care and end of life care services.
- Sound knowledge of relevant National Service Frameworks, guidelines, strategies and initiatives and the ability to appraise, interpret and implement in practice.
- Ability to rapidly synthesise and analyse complex information and present options, appraisals, recommendations and reports.
- Skilled in word processing, spreadsheets email, databases and using the internet.
- Highly developed communication skills (written and verbal) and the ability to communicate on complex matters issues and ideas in challenging situations.
- The ability to implement sound performance and reporting mechanisms for service activity, quality and outcomes and recognise and respond early to variances.
- Able to demonstrate tact and sensitivity with staff, colleagues and the public
