An exciting opportunity has arisen for a senior midwife with proven track record of strong operational management experience, clinical practice and governance to join King's College Hospital NHS as Head of maternity's governance compliance and assurance.
The principal responsibilities of the post are to ensure maternity services have an effective Risk and governance processes that can fulfil regulatory obligations and can withstand any external scrutiny, demonstrating high quality and safer maternity services. The expectation of the role is contribution to maternity services transformation through effective learning and embedding PSIRF that is in line with the assurance framework.
This role will provide an excellent opportunity for a proactive and organised individual with great interpersonal skills to influence maternity strategic planning trust wide as well as across the South East London Local Maternity and Neonatal system.
Head of maternity governance, compliance and assurance is a member of the senior midwifery team led by the director of Midwifery and Gynaecology Nursing (DOM), responsible for driving a positive learning culture and ensuring seamless clinical governance pathways.
Main duties of the job
Integral part of the role is to ensure there is a culture of learning that is effective and responsive to
evidenced based practice and able to adapt to changes in the overall national agenda and locally improves
outcomes. Other key aspects of the role include:
Promote compliance, assurance, and transformation through delivery of presentations and
discussions with large groups of staff at various forums
Utilising the education, risk and governance team and education to provide day to day visibility and
leadership to Midwifery staff on compliance, assurance, and transformation in the portfolio. This
includes monitoring that the learning from incidents are displayed and staff are aware of the top
reported risks and items on the risk register and how to escalate any safety concerns.
Provide expert direction, guidance and support to the Maternity Department, and also Neonatal,
Sonography and Anaesthetic Colleagues where appropriate, in achieving obligations in relation to
National Standards (e.g.Ockenden, CNST, CQC).
As line manager to QI lead midwife, can evidence an agreed QI program management that spans
across all areas to show how clinical teams are supported to close gaps in pathways to enable
service design using QI methodology.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder is a member of the Midwifery Senior Management Team, responsible for assisting the
Director of Midwifery within the Maternity services at Kings - (Denmark Hill and Princess Royal University
Hospital) in monitoring high quality and safer maternity services.
The post holder will be working with the Director of Midwifery and Gynaecology Nursing structure to organise
all activities related to risk and Governance processes based on key components of clinical governance
framework that supports high quality maternity services. In line with the trust's processes, the poster will
ensure effective multidisciplinary working across the care group that is supportive of strong culture of learning,
working closely and collaboratively with Women's Care group senior management team.
The post-holder will ensure that there is a culture of Quality improvement embedded within all aspects of a
learning culture in line with maternity transformation with specific attention to Equality, diversity and inclusion
agenda. This is to demonstrate that maternity services can effectively withstand any external scrutiny such
as CQC. This includes ensuring that the service can meet all national maternity standards and
recommendations that emerge from published guidelines and any maternity report that has recommendations
for Quality and safety for assurance and compliance. Relevant standards/inspections/reporting routes include

Qualifications & Experience
Essential criteria
- An MSC level qualification /post graduate management qualification or significant progress made to completion of further studies at Masters Level.
- A proven track record of operational service management at a senior level in an acute hospital environment, including staff management, financial management and change management
- High level of work organisation, self-motivation, drive for performance and improvement, and flexibility in approach and attitude
- Registered Nurse / Midwife, Currently on NMC Register
- Relevant and recent post registration experience as clinical midwifery practice
Desirable criteria
- Previous involvement of multi-agency working across the health economy at a senior level
- European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) or equivalent
- Significant experience and knowledge of the business planning process.
