Head of Knowledge (Maternity Cover - Part time)

About the role

We are looking for an action-focused individual to lead our Knowledge team. Creating, distilling and sharing knowledge that both upskills designers and commissioners about how to design for planet, and gives policymakers the evidence and recommendations they need to give design a central role in the green transition.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for:

  • The line management of 3 Senior Programme Managers; hosting monthly 1-2-1's, overseeing their
  • development and performance at the Design Council and ensuring their L&D needs are met
  • Overseeing the development and delivery of the team business plan ensuring projects are delivering against our strategy and Design for Planet mission and are being delivered on time, within budget and limiting scope creep
  • Delivery of the skills mission, ensuring the programme is leveraging stakeholder relationships and partnerships across the skills ecosystem, it's embedded within the Congress programming and events and is championed across the organisation
  • Working with the MarComms team to distil and communicate knowledge and insight in compelling ways, incl. frameworks, research, social media and blogs, tailored to different audiences
  • Knowledge content strategy, which includes research into the design sector, design best and emerging practice and case studies, and draws from the collective intelligence across our Design Council Expert network and our programmes
  • Oversees the development and delivery of:

    - our policy and advocacy work, ensuring that we have Government support for design, and policy that enhances Design for Planet

    - our approach to engaging our Design Council Experts, harnessing their huge collective wisdom and expertise

    - our research into the value of design, and insights into what could be done to increase it

  • Manages a team of 5 people, and is part of the Senior Leadership Team

Expert Knowledge and Qualifications

Skills & Experience

Ideally experience in one or more of the team focus areas:

  • Design policy & advocacy, ideally into Government
  • Developing learning and training programmes, and an understanding of learning experience design
  • Scoping large scale research & evaluation programmes
  • Experience of effective team leadership and management, supporting and coaching others to be their best at the same time as ensuring work happens to budget and time
  • Excellent synthesis and distilling skills
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent internal and external stakeholder management skills
  • Passionate about our Design for Planet mission
  • Skilled at bringing together different types of knowledge, and communicating to different types of audience
  • Background or appreciation of current design debates and practice

Corporate responsibilities

  • Proactively identify and manage risks and financial controls in relation to the Design Council and your specific area of responsibility
  • Comply with the Design Council's operational policies and procedures including financial and risk management, project management and evaluation processes, brand guidelines, GDPR, information security and internal health and safety policy
