Job Description

The Palace of Westminster, one of the best recognised buildings in the world, needs essential restoration to preserve it for future generations. The Palace has a rich and remarkable history. Westminster Hall is over 900 years old and has been the scene of great moments in our country's political life, covering 34 acres, and the size of more than 1,000 houses, there are 1,100 rooms, 100 staircases, three miles of passageways, four floors and 65 different levels.

As well as being one of the UK's biggest buildings it's one of the nation's busiest workplaces with thousands of people on site each day, from catering and security staff to MPs and Peers to experts keeping this iconic building running. The Restoration and Renewal Programme is carrying out the tens of thousands of hours of complex building surveys and investigations needed to inform future decisions on the restoration work needed.

We've already engaged teams of architects, engineers, project managers and contractors who will shape the future direction of the work. Restoring Parliament is already boosting UK industries, and the restoration will use UK materials wherever possible and create jobs and apprenticeships across the country, from engineering and high-tech design to traditional crafts such as carpentry and stonemasonry.

We're now looking for Head of Health, Safety and Wellbeing to join our Health, Safety and Wellbeing Team.

The Head of HSW is a strategic leadership role, setting exceptional standards and driving continuous improvement in HSW performance across the programme.

The following skills and experience are essential to your success in this role:

  • A recognised Health and Safety Qualification
  • Membership to a suitable professional body such as IOSH, IIRSM, APS, CIOB.
  • Significant experience of a senior HSW role within a large construction programme, organisation or estate
  • Experience in leadership and management of a team in a diverse project environment, with the ability to be self-directed and autonomous
  • A team player with project success as a key goal
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • A willingness to seek and embrace new challenges and to personally develop skills & knowledge

Salary circa £100,000 per annum

Security

Successful candidates will be required to complete security vetting to a minimum Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) level obtained through the Parliamentary Security Department (PSD). Candidates are required to pass these checks before a start date can be confirmed.

Applicants should also be aware that, depending on the role applied for, if they have resided outside of the UK for a total of more than two of the last five years, they may not be eligible for vetting.
