About the role:
The Head of Business Controlling is responsible for all aspects of commercial finance for the DHL eCommerce UK business.
Leading a team of business controllers and their teams to ensure the business accurately plans, forecasts and measures its performance. It is critical within this role to identify business performance gaps and opportunities in order continuously to improve financial performance. Use all available data to identify areas for improvement, root causes of under-performance and potential solutions.
This role has line management responsibility for three controllers, covering Revenue, Direct Costs and FP&A an overall team comprising 10 full-time employees.
Acting within DHL's 4 Strategic Pillars of Motivated People, Great Service Quality, Loyal Customers and Profitable Network, this role ensures colleagues within Finance and across the business understand the impact of productivity and financial management on the growth and profitability of the business.

In order to meet our customers' expectations and the demands of the market, the business focuses on continuous improvement, through careful management of processes, technology-based solutions etc. The Controlling function supports this approach by driving yield compliance, monitoring productivity over time and highlighting and supporting initiatives that drive continuous improvement, bringing down unit costs. It also supports the review and approval of new business proposals and investment business cases, carefully assessing the associated costs & benefits. Overall, the role and the function support the entire business, by providing a clear view of its financial performance, drawing clear links between revenue development, operational productivity, investment decision-making and financial performance.
- Provide accurate information to the business functions, ensuring decisions are made from clear and robust data and analysis
- Be responsible for translating business plans into the annual budget. Coordinate and support the planning within business functions, as well as meeting the requirements of Regional and Global Finance
- Secure and maintain a high level of technical expertise in accounting, internal control, planning, budgeting and forecasting
- Support the business to improve product and customer yield, through analysis and decisions on customer pricing, and services and surcharges, as well as cost improvement initiatives
- Manage the Investment and CAPEX process, to ensure business cases and decisions are robust. Also that all Regional and Global policies are complied with
- Be the valued Business Partner to the functional VPs, especially the Heads of Operations and Sales. Support and challenge them. Quantify the impact of decisions
- Lead the annual budgeting cycle, ensuring a robust and efficient process and that all deadlines are achieved
- Lead the month end close process to ensure consistent, accurate and timely reporting of results
- Proactively use available technology and data management principles to streamline and continuously improve the way Finance works
- Ensure compliance with regional finance rules, processes and deadlines
- Leverage reporting systems to ensure consistent, accurate and innovative presentation of business performance
- Lead and motivate the team and other colleagues. Display passion for the business
- Provide coaching to team members to support their professional development. Use feedback to enhance behaviours and performance
- Determine the optimal roles, performance targets and goals for the team. Ensure team members are managed appropriately against targets
- Reward initiative, promote talent, and rotate staff within the team to expand and enhance cross-functional knowledge
- Ensure resource levels within the team are maintained, following the correct recruitment processes where required
The ideal candidate will have:
• Qualified Accountant, probably ACA or CIMA (or equivalent)
• Influencing skills to ensure ideas are heard and adopted
• Energy and imagination to make innovations and improvements
• Curiosity to question and challenge
• Knowledge and application of Financial Accounting Standards
• Understanding of Balance Sheet risk and implementation of Governance procedures
• Positive attitude and resilience to manage competing demands and achieve deadlines
• Minimum 8 years post qualification experience
• Experience of large, complex, matrix-based international business environment
• Line management of qualified and non-qualified finance teams
