The British Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (BVCA) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join their team as the Head of Finance. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing the financial operations and supporting the CFO/COO with the finance strategy of the company.

As the voice of private capital in the UK, the BVCA has been advocating for the UK's private equity and venture capital industry for nearly four decades. The association actively represents a diverse community of long-term investors and facilitates communication between institutional investors, fund managers, companies, advisers, and service providers. The BVCA supports its members to help companies thrive and achieve their long-term objectives, both in terms of economic growth and societal impact.

As the Head of Finance, you will play a crucial role in driving the financial success of the BVCA. You will be responsible for managing and leading the finance team. With strong technical knowledge you will oversee the production of the management accounts, budgeting and forecasting, produce financial planning and analysis, treasury and cash management, and work with the CFO/COO on tax planning, compliance and financial reporting. Additionally, you will collaborate with senior executives to shape and produce analysis and modelling that inform strategic decision-making.

The Role

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced finance professional to actively contribute to the growth and success of the BVCA. Part of the wider Leadership Team and a conduit to the senior management team for the roll out of operational and strategic initiatives, the ideal candidate will have extensive experience in financial management, and will have gained some of their experience working within a small organisation.

Leading the finance team, with a high degree of cross team visibility, the Head of Finance will have strategic input and operational responsibility, being the reviewer and approver to the Finance Manager's Day job. Responsible for producing budgets, reforecasts, KPI financial reporting and financial analysis. The Head of Finance will have responsibility for the finance department, being technically strong and delivering information accurately and in a timely manner.

Acting as a change agent for the finance department, you will demonstrate proactive anticipation of business needs through data analysis and regular interaction with the Senior Management Team and Heads of Departments to understand the commercial challenges facing the Association, and support the CFO/COO in formulating recommendations to the senior management team.

Additional projects will include enhancing the finance team's technology and internal controls, whilst ensuring legal and regulatory compliance and keeping abreast and implementing best practice in all accounting matters.

Requirements

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all financial operations, reporting to the CFO/COO
  • Actively manage and lead the finance team, providing guidance, support and coaching to build a centre of excellence within the BVCA
  • Bring strong technical expertise as the reviewer and approver to the Finance Manager's day job, including management accounts, payroll, payment runs and taxes including P11D, PAYE Settlement, VAT, Corporation Tax
  • Work with the Finance Manager to produce the budget and reforecasts and management accounts
  • Prepare reports and analysis for senior management and the board of directors and be able to attend SMT meetings, if required, to confidently present the information as well as take direction
  • Develop, produce and implement financial planning and analysis processes to shape commercial reporting and KPIs, produce and implement financial planning and analysis processes to shape commercial reporting and KPIs
  • Partner with other teams to shape and produce analysis and modelling and use your understanding of the business to inform and support strategic decision-making, including for example on pricing
  • Monitor, produce and manage cash flow, reserves planning, treasury, and risk management activities
  • Oversee new software implementation and/ or development as required and take the lead as Finance representative in key IT projects Review contracts and negotiate with suppliers as required
  • Ensure the finance team's work meets the necessary presentational standards for senior management and the board
  • Be able to roll up sleeves when necessary to provide support to get work completed

What you can offer us:

  • ACA/ACCA Qualified with 10+ years of experience
  • Proven strong financial reporting and reconciliations experience
  • Proven track record of experience of coaching and team management
  • Excellent Financial modelling skills
  • Technical knowledge with regards to FRS102, VAT, CT and PAYE regulations. Understanding of the Partial VAT regulations and Mutual Trader Tax status is required but not essential for the role as training will be provided
  • Experience of supporting technology upgrades
  • Strong leader with a focus on deliverables, multi-tasking and meeting deadlines to a high standard

  • Capable of building effective relationships at the highest level
  • Reliable and excellent time management
  • Strong upward manager who is able to interpret and distil the detail to highlight key points or issues
  • Strong commercial acumen and the ability to understand the value of financial analysis in growing revenue and enable more informed business decisions
  • Ability to review and negotiate contracts
  • Strong Microsoft applications including Excel (VLOOKUPS, HLOOKUPS, SUMIFS, Pivot tables), PowerPoint, Word, Outlook
  • Previous experience with Business Central and PowerBI beneficial but not essential as training will be provided.
  • Previous experience working in an SME
  • Interest in the Private Equity and Venture Capital industry
