Job Description

Make a real impact. Keep our people safe. Shape the spaces where we help our communities.

Our people are at the heart of everything we do, and the environments they work in matter. With services delivered across multiple locations, we're looking for a Head of Estates & Safety to lead the strategic and operational management of our estate portfolio, creating safe, compliant, sustainable, and fit-for-purpose workplaces.

This is a senior, influential role combining strategic leadership with hands-on oversight. You'll work closely with senior leaders and operational teams to ensure our buildings, facilities, and safety practices support both current delivery and future growth. You'll lead the Estates Strategy, oversee capital projects and refurbishments, and maintain the highest standards of health and safety across the organisation.

Salary: £55,000 + £5,000 car allowance

Location: Onsite in Thornaby, Stockton (TS17 6EX)

Travel: Regular travel to our UK sites is an essential part of this role. A driving licence and access to your own vehicle is therefore required (expenses covered).

What you'll do

  • Lead and develop a high-performing Estates and Safety team, fostering a positive, supportive, and accountable culture
  • Drive the Estates Strategy, managing a diverse property portfolio and delivering capital works, refurbishments, accessibility improvements, and sustainability initiatives
  • Ensure full health & safety compliance, including fire safety, risk assessments, DDA, DSE, safeguarding, and statutory requirements
  • Oversee maintenance and facilities management, ensuring buildings are secure, safe, and fit for purpose
  • Manage budgets and resources, delivering value for money and clear reporting to senior leadership
  • Lead supplier and contractor relationships, including procurement and contract management
  • Champion sustainability, reducing environmental impact through energy efficiency and responsible estate management
  • Embed safety awareness, working with L&D to deliver training on health & safety, emergency response, mental health, and safeguarding
  • Stay ahead of legislation, ensuring accurate reporting and ongoing compliance

What You'll bring

You're a confident, credible leader with a strong background in estates and health & safety management across multiple sites. You balance strategic thinking with operational delivery and are comfortable managing complexity, risk, and change.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Proven experience leading estates and health & safety operations
  • Strong people leadership, budget management, and contractor oversight experience
  • In-depth knowledge of health & safety legislation and best practice
  • Excellent project management and communication skills
  • A proactive, solutions-focused mindset with high attention to detail
  • A genuine commitment to sustainability and inclusive workplaces
  • Relevant Professional qualification(s) such as NEBOSH, IOSH and/or IWFM

Above all, you'll role model our values of Kindness, Respect, Integrity, and Innovation, creating environments where our people can thrive.
