This job is brought to you by Jobs/Redefined, the UK's leading over-50s age inclusive jobs board.

About the role

Rail is already one of the most sustainable ways to travel - but we want to do even more. At Balfour Beatty, we're committed to reducing our environmental footprint protecting the communities we serve, and helping shape a greener future for the sector.

We're now looking for a Head of Environmental & Sustainability (Rail) to lead this journey, guiding our strategy and inspiring change across the Rail business.

The role is about more than setting direction - it's about embedding sustainability into the heart of how we operate. You'll bring vision and technical expertise, while also building capability, encouraging innovation, and helping our people feel part of the change.

What you'll be doing

In this role, you will:

  • Develop and embed the environmental and sustainability strategy across the rail business.
  • Build skills and confidence across teams, ensuring consistent delivery and fostering a culture of environmental excellence.
  • Provide technical leadership, technical direction, and governance to drive performance, compliance, and innovation.
  • Influence policy by working with regulators, industry partners, and stakeholders.
  • Support and advise senior leaders, protecting and strengthening the business through sustainable practice

Who we're looking for

We're looking for a leader who brings both technical know-how and a collaborative style. Someone who can see the big picture while also making practical changes happen.

You will have:

  • A degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability Engineering or a related field
  • Chartered Environmental status (CEnv)
  • Proven experience in setting and delivering environmental and sustainability strategies within a complex organisation (Rail, Transport or Infrastructure)
  • Strong influencing skills, with the ability to engage senior leaders and represent the business externally.
  • A genuine passion for driving positive environmental and social impact

Why work for us

- Smart working, giving you more flexibility such as staggered start and finish times, with up to 40% remote working, where roles allow.
- 25 days paid annual leave (pro rata)
- Family friendly policies which include 28 weeks full pay for maternity/adoption leave and four weeks full pay for paternity/partners leave
- Pension, share incentive plan, volunteering leave, recognition schemes and much more...
