Contract Type: Permanent, Full-time

We are the UK's aviation and aerospace regulator and recognised as a world leader in its field. Our activities are diverse, enabling the aviation industry to meet the highest safety standards, and we pride ourselves on our ability to adapt to the constantly evolving aviation environment.

The Role

We are seeking a Head of Environmental Reporting to lead the Civil Aviation Authority's (CAA) environmental reporting function. This critical role aims to enhance the impact of the CAA's reporting on the aviation sector's environmental performance.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and delivering a multi-year roadmap to expand, refine, and maximize the impact of our environmental reporting efforts. This work is a cornerstone of the CAA's Environmental Sustainability Strategy and requires close collaboration with multiple teams across the organisation.

The CAA has a statutory duty to publish information on the UK aviation sector's environmental impacts, including those related to climate change, noise, and air quality. We aim to broaden our monitoring of the sector's environmental performance, delivering a more comprehensive, detailed, and holistic understanding of the industry's environmental impact.

As outlined in our recent consultation, we are committed to evolving our environmental reporting-primarily through the annual Aviation Environmental Review (AER)-into a trusted, robust, and accessible tool. This enhanced reporting approach will provide accurate aviation environmental data that informs decision-making by Government, industry, and other stakeholders, ultimately helping drive meaningful environmental progress. The insights derived will influence policy development, shape the future of our environmental strategy, and strengthen our engagement with key stakeholders.

We are looking for a candidate with strong leadership creativity and advanced analytical skills, coupled with a clear understanding and proven experience in leveraging environmental performance data and insights to drive significant policy changes and better environmental outcomes.

Core Accountabilities

Strategic Leadership, Delivery and Oversight

  • Lead the development of the environmental reporting strategy and roadmap, setting ambitious and forward-thinking objectives aligned with the CAA's Environmental Sustainability Strategy.
  • Define and deliver the long-term vision for environmental reporting, ensuring it remains a trusted and impactful tool for informing stakeholders and driving positive change.
  • Analyse insights generated through the reporting function to shape and influence the CAA's broader sustainability strategy and policy development.
  • Propose actionable recommendations for addressing sector-wide environmental challenges, informed by data trends and emerging priorities.
  • Oversee the delivery of the CAA's complex environmental reporting work, including the multi-year roadmap and high-priority outputs like the Aviation Environmental Review (AER) 2025, ensuring deadlines are met and outputs/insights deliver measurable impacts.
  • Coordinate cross-organisational efforts, bringing together diverse teams to deliver high-impact reporting initiatives.

External Awareness and Foresight

  • Maintain an up-to-date and comprehensive understanding of the external environment, including public and political interests in aviation's environmental performance and emerging issues that could shape future reporting priorities (e.g., advancements in sustainable aviation technologies or evolving regulatory standards).
  • Ensure reporting aligns with global best practices and positions the UK aviation sector at the forefront of environmental accountability.

Team Leadership and Governance

  • Develop and lead a multidisciplinary delivery team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing culture.
  • Establish and oversee processes for data governance, review, and quality assurance, ensuring all datasets and insights are accurate, reliable, and transparent.
  • Play a leadership role within the Sustainability Team, under the Head of Sustainability, contributing to the broader strategic objectives of the CAA's environmental work.
  • Serve as a cross-CAA leader on environmental data and industry performance, championing the integration of environmental considerations into organizational decision-making.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders such as EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency), IATA (International Air Transport Association), CCC (Committee on Climate Change), and other international, governmental, and industry bodies.
  • Act as the CAA's representative in high-level discussions, advocating for robust environmental practices and alignment with global sustainability objectives.

Examples of Deliverables

  • Deliver the AER 2025, evolving it into a comprehensive and granular reporting tool that sets new standards for transparency in the aviation sector.
  • Develop a data governance framework that ensures the accuracy and reliability of all environmental data used in reporting.
  • Propose new initiatives or metrics to include in environmental reporting, such as lifecycle carbon assessments or biodiversity impact metrics.
  • Publish insights that influence industry stakeholders and inform governmental policy decisions on sustainable aviation.
  • Foster partnerships with international bodies like ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) to align UK aviation environmental reporting with global standards.

About You

  • Essential exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to inspire and guide teams across organisational boundaries.

Desirable

  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills, fostering collaboration and alignment among stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to manage large, complex programs with multiple workstreams, delivering high-quality results on time and within budget.
