We are searching for a Head of Engineering for the Skynet Military Satellite Communications network.

The Head of Engineering for SKYNET is an integral part of the Engineering & Technology Discipline, accountable to the SDW Programme Director, and reporting to the Director of Engineering Capability for UK Mission Systems.

The purpose of the role is to lead and manage the Skynet SDW Engineering and Operational Teams defining its top-level strategy (resource / capability) and providing effective direction and guidance. You will be leading the delivery of engineering activity on the Skynet 6 Service Delivery Wrap (SDW) programme, including providing leadership to the engineering team to deliver a range of new and modified subsystems, end to end services covering a range of Military and Commercial technologies and software. Reporting to the SDW Programme Director, you'll also be part of a multi-million-pound programme of technology change.

Responsibilities

  • Define the strategy of the SKYNET SDW Engineering Team, while managing resources in a safe, secure, and cost-efficient manner, and ensuring consistency with the broader Engineering, Operations, and Business Unit strategies.
  • Manage the capacity of competent resources to meet agreed technical programme, operational and site deliverables.
  • Ensures that SKYNET SDW Engineering Team performance metrics, procedures, processes, and systems are developed, implemented and of a quality that delivers against our Lines of Business requirements.
  • Support and mentor members within the SKYNET SDW Engineering and Operational Team in the production of solutions and their career progression. Including undertaking the role of a professional mentor.
  • Engage and inspire colleagues, promoting a diverse and inclusive environment that encourages them to seek opportunities for continuous improvement and personal development.
  • Works effectively with others, building relationships and interfaces with people, programme, projects, disciplines, international collaborators, supply chain, and key stakeholders in delivering the Programme and Operational Requirements.
  • Translates strategy into operational reality and deliver to agreed Mission Systems Blueprints.
  • Adopt a "See it, Solve it" mindset by identifying obstacles to success and taking ownership to find solutions to those problems.
  • Maintain and promote high personal standards in environment, safety, health, security, and quality and be a great team player.
  • Accountable for establishing a fully resourced engineering and technology team to meet the current and future opportunities, reduce programmatic risk, and support delivery and operational requirements.
  • Accountable for defining the engineering scope, implementation, and management thereof.
  • Accountable for Technical Change Management and associated technical assessment of change.
  • Accountable for delivery of Technical Artifacts.
  • Accountable for demonstrating compliance to regulation, legislation, relevant good practice (including safety and security), and defined processes (i.e. Engineering/Safety Management Plan(s).
  • Task/Matrix Management for the Engineering Team.

Qualifications

  • Degree, Master's or PhD in Telecommunications, Systems Engineering, or related field.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent professional accreditation.

Essential skills

  • Significant relevant (MilSatCom) experience and subject matter expertise.
  • Significant experience of leading and managing multi-disciplinary technical teams and programmes with demonstrable experience of Project Delivery on large and/or complex engineering Projects.
  • Leading transformation and change.
  • Proven track record of driving delivery, performance, and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrates financial and commercial awareness, management of budgets, and improvements.
  • Understanding of Operational Management, and an appreciation of Regulation, Legislation, Control of Works to ensure correct provision of resource to support Safe and Secure Operations.
  • Problem solving capability and the ability to simplify, prioritise, and resolve issues, using data as well as good judgement.
  • Able to communicate complex concepts and technologies, clearly and digestibility, to non-specialists, from the most junior colleague to the most senior Customer.
  • Ability to motivate teams to deliver great output on time and on cost, whilst creating a high performing team culture.
  • Ability to apply systems engineering principles in a manner that is tailored to the work in hand, driving for optimal compliance with requirements.
