How will your role contribute at NewDay?

The Head of Engineering, Engineering Excellence is a senior leadership role accountable for defining and leading on the platform standards for engineering excellence across the wider organisation.

We believe we are building something truly exciting underpinned by cloud native engineering, great talent and modern software development practices!

This role will have leadership responsibilities for approximately 20 engineers at various levels in London and a number of nearshore locations. We have you-build-it-you-run-it teams responsible for all elements of the product in partnership with the product organisation.

There are 4 elements to the is exciting opportunity;

  1. Work with other Heads of Engineering to define the standards followed on how we integrate a verify platform quality.
  2. Own the data collection and reporting on engineering telemetry and make this available to everyone that needs it. For example DORA metrics, test completion, code quality etc.
  3. Lead enabling teams that support engineering excellence, in particular performance, chaos testing and simulation.
  4. Development and ownership of a key customer journey testing tool that verifies different journeys for different tenants continuously.

What You'll Deliver:

  • Lead QA at scale - Shape and drive quality strategy across a 250+ strong engineering organisation building distributed cloud services.
  • Build specialised teams for advanced testing methods like chaos engineering and simulators.
  • Define and implement tooling, telemetry, and in-house platform solutions to measure and enhance software quality.
  • Hire, develop, and mentor top engineering talent, fostering a culture of continuous learning.
  • You will Inspire engineering leadership and cultivate a strong leadership mindset across teams and management.
  • Strategic workforce planning - Optimise team structure, locations, and staffing for long-term success.

What You'll Bring:

  • Engineering-first mindset - We prioritise a strong engineering background over pure QA experience.
  • Expertise in software development from the perspective of testing, bringing significant thought leadership to the organisation.
  • You will Drive innovation in software testing with deep technical expertise.
  • You will Understand how great architecture enables top-tier testing practices.
  • You will have a strong command of cutting-edge software testing frameworks.
  • Experience leading high-performing engineering teams and developing strong management structures.
  • Deep experience in collaborative, high-velocity development environments.
  • CI/CD expertise - Skilled in high-frequency deployments, automation, and performance testing under load!
  • You will have strong cloud development experience, ideally with Azure.
  • You will have a Background in building and testing high-performance platforms (trading, banking, or similar).

We would love you to know or learn

  • Experience in FinTech businesses
  • Experience in microservice architectures, event driven systems and multi-tenancy data patterns.
  • Experience in consumer lending or Credit Card issuing
