We're looking for a

Head of Digital Engineering

Based in London and reporting to the SVP, Software Engineering, the Head of Digital Engineering will be responsible for driving Hamilton's group digital transformation strategy.

This role combines strategic vision, technical expertise, and leadership to deliver scalable, secure, and innovative digital solutions. Key focus areas include developing cloud-native architectures, modern engineering practices, and digital platforms that enable critical business functions such as underwriting, claims processing, financial accounting, reserving, and regulatory compliance.

The ideal candidate will possess expertise in the Insurance/Reinsurance industry and emerging technologies like Gen AI, machine learning, and cloud technologies. They will also have a proven track record of leading complex digital initiatives, integrating industry standards such as ACORD ADEPT, and leveraging London Market digital platforms (e.g., Whitespace, PPL, Placing Hub).

What you will do

Strategic Leadership

  • Define and execute the digital engineering strategy, ensuring alignment with Hamilton's broader business goals and industry trends
  • Provide technical leadership to a diverse engineering team, setting technical direction, driving innovation, and fostering a culture of high performance and continuous improvement
  • Collaborate closely with business leaders to identify and address the digital needs of core (re) insurance operations, including underwriting, claims, and financial services

Engineering Delivery & Innovation

  • Oversee the delivery of digital solutions with a focus on scalability, performance, and security. Ensure all solutions meet regulatory requirements and industry standards
  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of cloud-native architectures, microservices, and AI-driven solutions that support automation and data-driven decision-making
  • Champion the adoption of modern engineering practices, including agile methodologies, continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), and DevOps

Collaboration & Stakeholder Management

  • Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing team of engineers, ensuring professional growth and skill development tailored to the demands of the insurance industry
  • Engage with cross-functional teams, including IT Product Teams, Program/Project Management, Executive Leadership team to deliver integrated, customer-centric solutions
  • Act as a technology evangelist, presenting complex technical concepts in a clear and actionable manner to non-technical stakeholders
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with external vendors, industry partners, and regulators to ensure Hamilton remains at the forefront of digital innovation in insurance

Risk & Compliance

  • Ensure all digital initiatives adhere to industry regulations and compliance standards (e.g., SOX, GDPR, FCA, DORA)
  • Lead risk management efforts, focusing on data security, system integrity, and operational continuity

What you require for the role

  • Industry experience in software engineering, with time spent within a technical leadership role
  • Proven track record of delivering complex digital platforms and solutions, preferably within the insurance or financial services sectors
  • Hands-on experience in delivering major digital initiatives successfully
  • Experience with the implementation and integration of ACORD ADEPT, Digital Underwriting platforms and messaging systems
  • Expertise in the insurance and reinsurance domains, including underwriting, claims, financial accounting, and actuarial processes. London Market experience will be a big plus

Technical Expertise

  • Extensive experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) and microservices architecture
  • Deep knowledge of modern programming languages, frameworks, and tools (e.g., JavaScript, Python, Kubernetes, React, etc.)
  • Expertise in Agile methodologies and DevOps practices
  • Strong understanding of security, scalability, and performance optimization specific to the insurance industry
