About the role

In line with Matalan's ambition to be the no.1 choice for our customers, the Senior Market Intelligence Analyst will help to drive a customer-centric culture that uses market and customer behaviour data to inform business strategy and decision-making.

A hands-on role for someone who loves being in the data, identifying insights and delivering actionable recommendations; the Senior Market Intelligence Analyst is responsible for delivery of impactful insights from our market data sources (e.g. Kantar Worldpanel, EDITED, GfK POS Tracker, BRC and customer surveys).

What you will do:

  • Deliver insightful analysis and actionable recommendations to inform business and category strategies.
  • Ensure that market data and insights are communicated in a clear and compelling way; championing strong data visualisation and leading on the refinement of our market reporting.
  • Show up with a growth mindset that is continuously looking for market, competitor and category opportunities.
  • Delivery of the market intelligence reporting schedule.
  • Working with data from e.g. Kantar Worldpanel, GfK POS Tracker, customer surveys, Springboard Footfall, competitor pricing & range audits (e.g. EDITED/ESA Retail), Mintel, Global Data etc
  • Utilise publicly available data such as company reports to round out our competitor intelligence
  • Project manage ad-hoc research on competitors and the market when needed, taking responsibility for every step in the process from writing the research brief through to questionnaire design through to analysis and debrief. Collaborating with the Brand Insight Manager and CX Manager where the insight needed combines market with customer, CX and/or brand.
  • Delivery new market opportunities and insight reporting
  • Build strong partnerships with the Trading teams (buying, merchandising and marketing planning), becoming a trusted collaborator on strategy and planning.
  • Lead on refining our ways of working with the Trading teams to ensure the market data and insight delivered is both timely and relevant to strategy planning needs. Move us from a reactive partner to one anticipating needs and shaping how teams interpret and utilise data.
  • Enable, coach and encourage stakeholders to self-serve where relevant and advisable from dashboards and agency partner portals (e.g. Kantar WPO, EDITED, BRC).
  • Own the relationships with our market data agencies; partnering to continuously improve reporting and drive out deeper understanding of the market; managing costs effectively and maintaining high standards.
  • Collaborate with and build a strong team with insightand data peers.

About You

  • Fascination with markets, a passion for retail, and a love of data
  • Proven experience in analyzing and synthesizing large datasets to extract key insights for informing business discussions
  • Familiarity with large market intelligence datasets such as Kantar Worldpanel, GfK POS tracking, NIQ POS tracking, and EDITED, with proficiency in Kantar Worldpanel being advantageous
  • Strong statistical background with confidence in various techniques including correlation, regression, cluster analysis, data modeling, and forecasting
  • Ideally skilled in statistical tools like SPSS, DisplayR, Q Market Research, or similar, with additional experience in R, Python, or SQL being beneficial
  • Ability to present complex concepts in a clear and concise manner, adapting to the audience's level of understanding
  • Established credibility and trust across stakeholder audiences, including peers, agency partners, and senior leaders
  • Minimum of 4 years' experience in a fast-paced, deliverables-driven environment, demonstrating the ability to manage competing demands and respond to emergent stakeholder needs
  • Higher education qualification with a substantial focus on maths and statistics, economics, data science, or business analytics, or equivalent career experience
