Job summary
These are exciting times for nursing in a progressive and rapidly expanding cancer centre. Adult cancer nursing in the Macmillan Cancer Centre comprises of 4 departments;o Supportive Care: Red Cell/General Haematology area provides care for haemoglobinopathy patients as well as follow-up and treatments for patients who have undergone high dose chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant.o Chemotherapy Daycare: A busy and varied Oncology and Haematology chemotherapy suite.o Apheresis: A highly respected Apheresis service which includes the peripheral blood stem cell harvest programme, and therapeutic plasma exchange.o Ambulatory Care: where patients undergo high dose chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant as a day-case while staying in a nearby hotel.
We provide highly specialised care for adults who have both a cancer and non-cancer diagnoses and cover a wide range of both haematological and oncology diseases. We are open between 8am and 8pm Monday to Saturday, with Ambulatory Care open every day of the week. Staff in this friendly and supportive team develop a range of advanced skills and knowledge by rotating between the 4 main adult nursing treatment areas within the Centre.The successful applicant will need to have a minimum of 12 months post registration experience within an acute healthcare setting. Oncology or haematology experience is desirable, but not essential, as we are looking for high calibre nurses with potential.
Main duties of the job
This is a fast track development role for the unit. The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to develop as a qualified haemato-oncology nurse by working in the 4 main areas (about the largest in the UK). He/She will be supported in their fast development by the nursing team and clinical practice facilitators to become competent in care of the cancer patient, including blood and IV administration and the safe administration ofchemotherapy..
