ABOUT THE JOB

The Global Design Engineering Manager is responsible for the leadership and functional management of a globally located team of design and drafting engineers who design fluid film bearings for a range of rotating machinery applications in the oil & gas, power generation, wind, and industrial markets in a matrix-based multi-functional organizational structure.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or other Engineering with a minimum of 15 years' work experience in an engineered product environment, including a minimum of 7 years' experience managing a global team. Over 10 years' experience managing a global team is preferred.
  • Ability to create and execute training plans, including the development of training material is required. Experience is preferred.
  • Experience in the design of fluid film bearings, rotordynamic analysis and bearing failure analysis is preferred.
  • Experience implementing GD&T as a standard for a design/drafting team is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team of professionals within a highly technical, fast paced work environment.
  • Demonstrated strength building relationships and communicating in a matrix-type organization structure.
  • Prior experience using a PLM system is required. Prior experience as an administrator of a PLM system is preferred.
  • Demonstrated skill leading continuous improvement projects and events or other problem-solving methodologies.
  • Must be extremely focused and have a strong attention to detail
  • Must have the ability to multi-task and prioritize project timelines
  • Proficiency with MS Office and Windows operating systems is expected. Working knowledge of 2D and 3D CAD, preferably AutoCAD/Inventor.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Take responsibly for the processes that assure the development of safe, reliable and commercially viable designs that meet customer specifications, whilst maintaining a staff budget that is appropriate for the revenue and profit expectations of the business.

You will put systems in place to measure the pace and quality of progress, be responsible for achieving and sustaining engineering lead time, on time delivery, and total backlog of the global design teamwork.

Create and implement staff training, development, and mentoring to help them reach their full potential within the context of a fast-paced customer focused environment.

Provide leadership across projects and build relationships with both internal and external customers and stakeholders.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manage a global staff team of Design Engineers, Designers, and Drafters up to and including Technical Lead and Team Lead level in a matrix organization.
  • Owns responsibility for reporting and maintaining transparent key performance indicators for global team including but not limited to lead time, completion time, on time delivery, total backlog, first pass yield, error rates, and past due jobs.
  • Develop, establish, and implement long-range and short-term strategies and operating policies to achieve established departmental goals and objectives.
  • Hire new staff, support personal development, maintain team skill matrix and improvement plans, carry out performance evaluations, and motivate individuals to perform consistently at a high level.
  • Prioritize, schedule and delegate work assignments to engineers, as well as provide support to his/her staff.
  • Owns responsibility for the WB PLM system including data management including Trade Compliance management.
  • Develop project schedules, budgets and timetables for projects as required.
  • Manage communication between manufacturing/engineering/sales and supervise the quality and timeliness of sustaining work and projects.
  • Create engineering standards and perform technical reviews as required to ensure products are fully and correctly defined, and appropriate design verification and validation steps have been completed.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement by engaging the team in CI training and activities and holding them accountable for the expected results.
  • Ensure effective liaison with the Chief Engineer and within the Engineering group to build and maintain consistently high engineering standards, drive relevant product development and ensure analysis tools and reference materials remain fit for purpose.
  • Maintain ISO certifications and put systems in place that assure products meet appropriate national and international codes and standards
  • Confer with management and other staff regarding manufacturing capabilities, production schedules, and other considerations to facilitate production processes.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams at other DPC sites creating synergy between aftermarket technology implementation and OEM technology development needs.
  • Participate in customer and supplier meetings as required to resolve technical and project management issues.
  • Initiate research initiatives with internal and/or external research facilities to further develop technology from an experimental and analytical perspective.
  • Provide fluid film bearing training seminars at customer and/or internal sites as needed and be able to fine-tune the training to the specific needs of the audience.
  • Provide customers with engineering analysis and conceptual design reports when necessary, including rotordynamic analysis when required to ensure proper operation. Support and attend on-site and off-site customer meetings for scoping, reporting, and/or supporting ongoing projects related to focus area.
  • Develop close working relationships with technical contacts at strategic customers and suppliers, ensuring that business opportunities are recognized and responded to appropriately at an early stage.

Travel Requirements: you must be willing to travel to customers, end users, conferences and other DPC sites in the United States, Europe, India, and China. (<25%)
