The Role
The post holder will provide direct support to students who have identified or are showing signs of mental health difficulties, emotional and psychological difficulties and are in receipt of Disabled Student Allowance (DSA). You will also be involved with the welfare team, student services and on-site staff, such as the security team, who can come to you for advice to help students.

The aim of the Student Welfare Service is to ensure that health and wellbeing are an integral part of the everyday life of Aberystwyth students. We focus on helping students gain knowledge, develop skills and find solutions so they can support their own wellbeing and develop self-reliance. The Welfare Service does not duplicate or replace statutory provision, but facilitates the path to other community services where necessary.

  • Working within a small multidisciplinary team, the post holder's main role will be to provide one to one Mental Health mentoring support, funded by the Disabled Students' Allowance, to students who have been diagnosed with mental health difficulties and students who have difficulties from such is beginning to emerge. This is a key post to enable students to continue with their academic programmes. There is no guarantee of hours for this position, and the number of hours will be determined depending on the demand in the department.
  • The ideal candidate will be a qualified and registered professional, e.g. A Counsellor, Mental Health Nurse or Social Worker with significant experience of providing support to individuals with emotional and psychological difficulties using a number of methods. The post holder will also be able to show solid evidence of working safely and effectively in cases where there is significant risk, by using internal referral processes, and processes in the wider context of NHS services and other statutory and voluntary agencies according to the need. The post holder will need to work flexibly in accordance with the needs of the service.
  • Undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the job.
  • Effectively assess and escalate risks where appropriate.

Who you are - Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills required
Essential

  • Professional qualification as a Counsellor, Mental Health Nurse, Social Worker or Psychotherapist together with significant experience of working with young adults.
  • Extensive professional experience, after gaining a qualification, of working in large and complex organisations, and the ability to demonstrate a clear understanding of the way that context affects clinical decisions.
  • Experience of managing risk crisis situations, remaining calm in mitigating challenging situations, and referring those situations to other appropriate members of staff when necessary.
  • Experience of providing one to one support over a short term.
  • Specialist excellence in assessing mental health needs and risk assessment, and knowledge of the mental health services available if an individual needs to be referred externally.
  • Thorough understanding of data protection and confidentiality policies, and able to comply with those policies.
  • An ability to understand the bilingual nature of the University and an awareness of the procedures in place to support working bilingually.
  • Desirable

  • Registered with a professional body and experience of working as a registered nurse or social worker.
  • A qualification recognized by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or an equivalent qualification in providing counselling/distance sessions.
  • Familiar with the legislation of the United Kingdom regarding disability and equality.
  • Familiar with local NHS mental health services e.g. The Emergency Team, the Early Intervention Team etc.
  • Information about the University's structures and procedures.
  • Oral (spoken) and Written Welsh Level C2.*
