FPC Digital - Head of Engineering

The Head of Engineering (HoEng) is responsible for leading and managing the Master System Integrator (MSI) function within FPC Digital, which comprises a team of specialist engineers, solutions architects and global delivery partners. The Head of Engineering is responsible for delivering highly specialised technical digital building projects to our clients globally, and for ensuring that the MSI function is aligned with our company's overall strategy and vision.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the FPC Digital Director on all aspects within our MSI capability, the Head of Engineering shall:

  • Develop and implement our MSI strategy in-line with FPC Digital's overall strategy.
  • Lead our MSI function in the development and implementation of execution strategies, partner programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Manage our team of solutions architects, engineers and partners, ensuring the team has the skills and knowledge to meet the needs of the business and our clients.
  • Work with clients to understand their needs and develop deliverable solutions that meet their specific requirements.
  • Manage the delivery of our project portfolio, ensuring the MSI function has the resources it needs to deliver projects on time and within budget.
  • Ensure highest quality of service and deliverables
  • Manage the commercial performance of the MSI function, including generating new business and ensuring that projects meet or exceed commercial performance margin requirements.
  • Collaborate with our development and operations teams to create, test, deploy, and operationalize FPC Digital solutions.

The ideal candidate will be a demonstrated stand-out business leader with outstanding technical expertise within the digital buildings and OT technology markets. They will have a strong understanding of the latest trends and technologies in this field, and be able to apply this knowledge to develop innovative solutions for clients. In addition, they will have a proven track record of delivering successful projects, and be able to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders both internally and externally.

In addition, the ideal candidate should possess strong commercial acumen and be able to manage function, program and project commercials to ensure profitability and close management of project finances throughout delivery.

Leadership

The Head of Engineering will be accountable for leading and managing our global MSI function, this includes:

  • Leading and managing our MSI function globally, with responsibility for line management and development of all team members, including both direct and indirect reports, ensuring you:
    • Manage team performance through effective objective-setting, delegation, communication and through performance appraisals
    • Devise team growth plans through active promotion of our group learning and development program
    • Support the growth recruitment process through participation in the interview and assessment process as required for delivery of FPC Digital's growth objectives
    • Monitor and report on function performance against agreed targets, compliance requirements and in line with our strategic objectives
  • Oversee the successful delivery of MSI contracts, ensuring high-quality, professional and technically sound delivery to clients, through:
    • Building and maintaining strong, trusted relationships with clients, through the understanding of requirements and business objectives. Working proactively to meet or exceed expectations, in respect of time, quality, cost and communication.
    • Working collaboratively across FPC Digital and our group to ensure that our MSI function successfully delivers on all programs and projects
    • Ensuring service delivery meets contractual obligations together with any other relevant client-side documents as agreed with our clients
  • Actively identify, evaluate and manage all risks to our people, finances, strategy and reputation, through effective risk management
  • Develop, maintain and implement an MSI strategy that is capable of:
    • Establishing long-term growth through the implementation of a global delivery framework, including both self delivery and partnership delivery
    • Contributing to the development of future services, capabilities and solutions, in conjunction with our Innovation Board and Development team
    • Maintaining and improving our capability in delivering digital buildings to our clients
    • Supporting, advising, and collaborating on the latest technologies, initiatives and solutions, processes and standards for our clients
    • Enhancing our brand reputation throughout the market, both within our MSI function and across our wider capabilities
    • Providing an enhanced market leading quality of service and delivery to the market

Technical Delivery Management

The Head of Engineering is accountable for the delivery of all works within our MSI function, this includes (but is not limited to) ensuring:

  • Technical deliverables, designs and services are in line with internal, client and local/regional technical strategy, standards, specifications and guidelines
  • The development, implementation, management and continual improvement (through Innovation Board) of Engineering Standards for MSI projects, ensuring alignment with Digital Buildings Design standards
  • That all technical code, associated documentation, data and metadata for the delivery of MSI projects is retained under version control in the company's central repository, including (but not limited to) specifications & requirements, architecture and system designs, source code, headend configuration backups, graphics, description of operations, network and system schematics, including, API, data models, points schedules and asset data
  • Appropriate and effective quality assurance of delivery from proposal, design, execution and handover
  • Alignment of the team's technical and professional skills in order to meet current and future delivery requirements
  • FPC Digital technical standards, processes and procedures are fit for purposes
  • Quality management and continual improvement of the above

Commercial

  • Working with our group Business Operations team to ensure adherence to commercial processes, procedures and policies
  • Manage commercial and performance management of all contracts, ensuring that delivery teams meet commercial and delivery targets and escalate issues appropriately
  • Accountable for ensuring the commercial appropriateness and technical viability of proposals and contracts / scope of works
  • Maintain full awareness of the commercial status of all contracts within our MSI function
  • Manage the allocation and effective utilisation of resources for all contracts, in full consideration of associated contracted scope of services and commercial requirements

Governance

  • Ensure compliance with standards (internal/external) in accordance with legislation and guidelines pertinent to the company's role as an employer
  • Recommend changes to policies and procedures to improve governance and compliance

Business Development

As a senior leader within FPC Digital the Head of Engineering shall, in conjunction with leadership and business development teams:

  • Support the business development team in business development activities, including:
    • Proactively identify, develop and support new business development opportunities and contribute to strategic client account planning. This may include accessing your professional network to seek leads/opportunities that may be relevant to our integrated services
    • Provide input to the business development strategy and campaigns based on a strong understanding of the needs and priorities of our industry and clients
    • Support the tender process including bid & proposal development, in particular commercial / financial planning, delivery and resource planning, scope development and delivering client presentations
  • Reviewing / agreeing client and FPC Digital technical and commercial documentation, including but not limited to engagement letters, SoWs/Task Orders, program delivery requirements, scope definition, KPIs/SLAs and associated client / industry specification
  • Nurture and maintain key client/stakeholder relationships that are essential to the retention, growth and development of our clients
  • Represent FPC Digital in the market, by building and maintaining partnerships with relevant industry organisations across all regions to enhance the reputation and standing of the company. This may also require participating / presenting at select professional events hosted by industry/trade organisations.

Requirements

The Head of Engineering should possess experience and qualifications aligned with the following:

  • Minimum 10 years Digital / Smart Buildings or relevant industry, with experience in a consultancy or solutions business e.g. Head of function, Lead Consultant, Lead Designer or senior program manager
  • Proven technical experience in delivering at scale IoT cloud solutions to digital buildings industry, including excellent understanding of systems design, programming & integration, Cybersecurity, APIs, data normalisation and ontologies (e.g. Brick, Haystack), MQTT, AWS/Azure/GCP IoT cloud platforms and control systems programming (e.g. Niagara, Delta or similar) and coding systems integrations (e.g. python, c#, javascript, etc.)
  • Proven track record in Digital Buildings / IoT or related industry, working with world leading clients at a global scale with mixed real estate portfolios (e.g. Commercial Real Estate, Pharmaceutical, Industrial, Data Centres, etc.)
  • Strong technical management skills with experience leading complex projects, including design, delivery and operation of Digital Buildings / IoT systems.
  • Leading the development of coordinated Smart Buildings / MEP Controls designs
  • Excellent global team management skills, with the ability to lead and motivate a technical team of senior consultants, architects and engineers
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with experience building and maintaining strong client relationships with an ability to navigate complex blue chip organisations, whilst communicating complex technical information in a clear and concise manner
  • Ability to translate both client business needs and complex technical solutions into the successful delivery of effective technical solutions
  • Experienced in supporting business development teams skills, with new business opportunities, including proposal development, estimating and presentation
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a related field, or demonstrable equivalent professional experience
  • Competent using Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office software applications and use of Cloud Platforms (Google, Microsoft, Amazon) and Data Analytics tools.
