Job Overview

The First Line Manager (FLM) is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of a specific team or section within the warehouse or logistics environment. The role ensures that operational targets are met while maintaining high levels of efficiency, safety, and staff engagement. As an FLM, you will manage and lead a team of operatives, ensuring smooth workflow, adherence to company standards, and continuous improvement in operations

Key Responsibilities

  • Directly manage and lead a team of warehouse operatives, ensuring that all daily tasks such as picking, packing, shipping, receiving, and stock control are completed efficiently and accurately.
  • Monitor team performance, provide feedback, and address any performance issues. Set individual and team goals in line with the overall business objectives and ensure KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) are met or exceeded
  • Organise and plan shift patterns to ensure adequate coverage and effective workload distribution across the team. Anticipate and resolve bottlenecks or delays in the workflow. Proactively manage team absence
  • Cultivate and maintain an equitable, diverse and inclusive environment where colleagues feel empowered to be themselves. Ensure the workplace remains free from discrimination, harassment and bullying.
  • Promote a culture of safety, ensuring that all employees adhere to health and safety guidelines. Conduct regular safety inspections and ensure the team is trained in safe working practices.
  • Identify training needs within the team and work with senior management to provide necessary training and development opportunities. Coach and mentor team members to support their growth and improve overall team performance.
  • Maintain high standards of quality by ensuring that all processes related to stock handling, packaging, and shipment preparation adhere to company procedures. Address any issues related to stock discrepancies, damages, or customer complaints.
  • Proactively identify opportunities for process improvements and work with the wider management team to implement changes that enhance productivity, reduce costs, and streamline operations.
  • Provide regular updates to senior management on team performance, operational issues, and any areas for concern. Prepare reports on key operational metrics, such as productivity, accuracy, and efficiency.

Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience in a warehouse, logistics, or production environment, ideally in a supervisory or management role.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage, motivate, and develop a team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organisational and time-management abilities.
  • Knowledge of warehouse management systems (WMS) and other relevant technologies.
  • Familiarity with health and safety standards and best practices in a warehouse or logistics environment.
