As part of the Transport UK Group, West Midlands Trains delivers around 1,300 train journeys a day, for more than 60 million passengers a year, across our two brands - West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway.
We are committed to delivering a safe and reliable train service, by investing in our fleet of trains, stations and employees. As part of this investment, we are looking to recruit a Fleet Systems Interface Manager on a full-time, permanent basis based in Birmingham.
What does the role involve?
- Represent WMT as the nominated Fleet Systems Interface Manager and the point of contact for all issues relating to train and wayside communications systems.
- Liaise with Train manufacturers and provide guidance on functional requirements and phasing of delivery.
- Review and provide feedback on project plans, design documentations, test specifications and change requests.
- Attend project reviews and act as co-signatory for approving design modifications.
- Custodian of train systems databases for all WMT fleets, including but not limited to ASDO, GSM-R and PIS, development of change requests and undertake necessary updates to the database as and when required.
- Accountable for all PIS related work packages and need to pro-actively work with train manufacturers and PIS suppliers to deliver the best in passenger information.
- Manage systems that interface to the PIS, including but not limited to GPS, passenger counting and ASDO.
- Ensure compliance with the applicable regulatory requirements and WMT Engineering Change process for software and database changes.
- Support route proving activities for new fleet introduction.
- Monitor the systems in-service, maintaining the fault registers and work with the supplier to resolve the problem in a timely manner.
- Responsible for witnessing the PIS testing for design modifications and ensure the system functionality meets the requirements set out by WMT.
- Provide improvement ideas to the business to enhance the onboard passenger experience.
- Regular attendance at various meetings to provide PIS updates to the business.
- The Fleet Systems Interface Manager will at times be required to deputise for the Fleet Approvals Engineer.
- Any other duties commensurate with the grade and post and as required.
What skills and experience do I need to do the job?
- Broad technical knowledge of rail vehicles and their systems.
- In depth knowledge of fleet related NTSN's, Euro Norms, Railways Group Standards and all applicable standards and specifications.
- Strong technical background and understanding of communication systems/ interfaces.
- Basic knowledge of software development cycle and network technology (Ethernet, Wi-Fi, etc.).
- Experience of Real Time Passenger Information Systems and Darwin workstation.
- Experience of risk assessment and root cause analysis.
- Strong problem-solving skills and good attention to detail.
- Self-motivated, consistently takes the initiative to get things done and confident to engage with all stakeholders.
