Job overview

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHT), one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK, is seeking a dynamic and experienced Capital Finance Manager. With a turnover of £1.5bn, ICHT provides specialist and acute care to over a million patients annually in North West London and beyond. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Finance Directorate and play a pivotal role in managing the Trust's capital financial operations.

As the Finance Manager for Capital and Fixed Assets, you will be responsible for overseeing the fixed asset register, ensuring accurate recording and classification of all assets, including depreciation, asset disposal, and lease management. You will be required to have hands-on experience with fixed asset accounting software.

A key part of your role will be ensuring robust general ledger management and providing technical expertise on asset management, including advising on capitalisation practices and what costs can be capitalised in line with financial standards. You will take ownership of capital month-end reporting, providing timely and accurate reports, and lead on the internal and external reporting of capital financials. Your analytical acumen will allow you to scrutinise financial data, identify trends, and make informed decisions to optimise capital investment for the Trust.

You will lead the capital finance reporting team, consisting of three members, and will be responsible for ensuring that the team meets its reporting deadlines.

Main duties of the job

  • Maintain the integrity of the capital financial systems within the Trust, to develop financial policies and practices as required, and liaise with external and internal audit and counter-fraud.
  • Lead the month end process for financial accounts and reporting to external agencies, and to assist in the production of the Trust Annual Accounts and the external audit process (including leading and managing the audit process for the capital team)
  • To manage the capital accounting of the Trust and advise on all aspects of capital. Maintain an accurate and up to date asset register, monitor expenditure on all capital schemes, manage depreciation journals and reconcile the asset register on a regular basis.
  • To be the VAT expert for the Trust's capital projects and ensure the Trust complies with current VAT and HMRC requirements.
  • To support the Head of Capital Finance to ensure that the financial and other systems of the Trust meet all statutory requirements, through the development and implementation of appropriate policies and procedures (including Standing Financial Instructions) and through appropriate audit and control.

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Qualified Accountant (CCAB or Equivalent)
  • Knowledge of Capital accounting
  • Knowledge of financial and accounting procedures, financial reporting standards, and financial & other aspects of relevant legislation, gained through Professional Accountancy Qualifications (CCAB or equivalent) and have great demonstratable financial accounting experience.

Desirable criteria

  • Further relevant specialist training in technical skills and NHS financial management

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Providing quality accounting services and financial advice to senior financial staff
  • Experience of working on capital projects
  • Managing a wide range of internal and external stakeholder relationships, including negotiating outcomes to problems
  • Advises and persuades senior budget holders on financial issues.

Desirable criteria

  • Significant experience of working within the NHS
  • Capital Aset Register System (CARS) experience.
  • Co-ordinating annual asset valuation exercise.

Skills/Knowledge/ Abilities

Essential criteria

  • Technically competent with good accounting and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of current accounting issues and a detailed understanding of the regulatory framework
  • Able to solve complex, multi-dimensional issues, requiring concentration for long periods of time and analysis of complex data
  • Evidence of planning and delivering deadlines and service on time for self and teams.

Desirable criteria

  • Specific experience of using eFinancials, Business Objects, Qlikview and other specific ICHT financial systems
