Job overview

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHT), one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK, is seeking a dynamic and experienced Capital Finance Manager. With a turnover of £1.5bn, ICHT provides specialist and acute care to over a million patients annually in North West London and beyond. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Finance Directorate and play a pivotal role in managing the Trust's capital financial operations.

As the Finance Manager for Capital and Fixed Assets, you will be responsible for overseeing the fixed asset register, ensuring accurate recording and classification of all assets, including depreciation, asset disposal, and lease management. You will be required to have hands-on experience with fixed asset accounting software.

A key part of your role will be ensuring robust general ledger management and providing technical expertise on asset management, including advising on capitalisation practices and what costs can be capitalised in line with financial standards. You will take ownership of capital month-end reporting, providing timely and accurate reports, and lead on the internal and external reporting of capital financials. Your analytical acumen will allow you to scrutinise financial data, identify trends, and make informed decisions to optimise capital investment for the Trust.

You will lead the capital finance reporting team, consisting of three members, and will be responsible for ensuring that the team meets its reporting deadlines. Additionally, you will manage interim and year-end audits for capital and ensure compliance with all statutory and regulatory financial reporting standards, such as IFRS, and the Department of Health and Social Care Group Accounting Manual particularly relating to capital assets, intangible assets, SaaS, and asset disposals. This role will also require you to lead teach-ins and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for key technical areas related to capital finance.

The ideal candidate will be a fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent), with strong knowledge of IFRS, VAT compliance, and capital finance principles. You will be adept at managing multiple deadlines, leading teams, and improving financial systems and processes in large, complex organisations. Advanced Excel skills, particularly in data modelling and summarising information, are essential. Experience in the NHS or a similar large-scale organisation will be highly beneficial.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an ambitious, self-motivated individual with strong commercial awareness and leadership skills. The role offers scope for career progression within one of the UK's leading NHS Trusts, with the potential to make a significant impact on the financial operations that support patient care.

Main duties of the job

  • To manage the capital accounting of the Trust and advise on all aspects of capital. Maintain an accurate and up to date asset register, monitor expenditure on all capital schemes, manage depreciation journals and reconcile the asset register on a regular basis.
  • To be the VAT expert for the Trust's capital projects and ensure the Trust complies with current VAT and HMRC requirements.
  • To support the Head of Capital Finance to ensure that the financial and other systems of the Trust meet all statutory requirements, through the development and implementation of appropriate policies and procedures (including Standing Financial Instructions) and through appropriate audit and control.
