The Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences (NMES) is a vibrant faculty based in the heart of London with a long tradition of world-leading research and teaching in physics, mathematics, chemistry, informatics, engineering and natural sciences.

The Faculty Health & Safety Manager will support this large faculty of over 6,000 students and staff in its academic mission through the implementation and monitoring of health and safety management arrangements.

About the role

Reporting to the Head of Technical Services, the Faculty Health & Safety Manager will lead on health and safety management for the Faculty, liaising with colleagues at all levels in the Professional Services teams and academic departments, and representing the Faculty in university committees, working groups and fora. They will work closely with the University's Professional Services teams: in particular King's Health & Safety Services, Estates & Facilities, and other Faculty Health & Safety Managers.

The postholder will review and maintain health and safety compliance across all Faculty spaces via inspection and monitoring, reporting breaches to the Faculty's Health & Safety Committee, senior leadership and King's Health & Safety Services as appropriate. They will lead the Faculty's Health & Safety Working Group to execute actions instructed in the Faculty Health and Safety Committee and to address health and safety matters arising. Working closely with the Head of Technical Services, the role holder will initiate and lead Faculty projects as part of an annual Service Plan to address operational aspects of health and safety management, in particular to support a transition to a harmonised cross-campus, cross-department approach to technical services.

The postholder will delegate as direct line manager to the Faculty Health and Safety Adviser, and via 'dotted line' management (matrix management) to Departmental Safety Officers, and advising all health and safety roles within the Faculty.

This is a full time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

1. Minimum level 6 qualification in a relevant subject, such as an undergraduate or postgraduate degree and/or appropriate professional qualifications in Health & Safety management (e.g. NEBOSH General Certificate)

2. Substantial experience of Health & Safety management in a higher education or research environment with specific expertise in laboratory safety.

3. Comprehensive working knowledge of Health & Safety and environmental regulations and current best practice applicable to the work area.

4. Excellent spoken and written communication skills, with strong interpersonal and influencing skills.

5. Experience of carrying out workplace inspections, generating and managing the completion of actions, and producing reports to present to management committees and senior leadership.

6. Ability to engage and encourage colleagues and external contacts to build relationships, promote a positive Health & Safety culture and champion environmentally sustainable practices.

7. Strong IT skills including the ability to prepare and integrate professional documents, reports, forms, spreadsheets in the Sharepoint environment.

Desirable criteria

1. Higher degree (level 7/8) such as Masters or PhD in a relevant field.

2. Experience of delivering health and safety training and induction at varying levels of competency and experience

3. Significant experience of building or working with analytics dashboards (eg. PowerBI)

4. Experience with designing or managing electronic organisational resources supporting medium-large scale organisations (hundreds to thousands of users)
