About Us

We have an exciting opportunity for a Facility Manager in the NMR Facility at King's College London. The NMR Facility forms part of the Centre for Biomolecular Spectroscopy on Guy's Hospital Campus of King's College London. Supported by the Wellcome Trust and the British Heart Foundation, the current facility includes a Bruker 800 MHz three-channel instrument equipped with cryoprobe, a Bruker 700 MHz four-channel instrument equipped with cryoprobe and sample changer, a new Bruker 600 MHz with triple resonance prodigy probe, HR-MAS probe and sample changer, and a Bruker 400 MHz equipped with MAS.

The Facility supports a large and vibrant research community at King's providing state-of-the-art facilities for researchers across the College.

About the Role

Reporting to Associate Director, Core Facilities, and working closely with the Academic Director, the post holder will be responsible for all aspects of the operational management of the facility, including financial oversight, people management, reporting, health and safety, equipment maintenance and business development.

The successful applicant will be expected to deliver an excellent service to facility users, providing expert guidance in experimental design, implementation, data collection and analysis. They will be responsible for the management, support and future development of the NMR Facility, ensuring that it continues to support the needs of our researchers. This role provides opportunities to contribute actively to research both individually and in collaboration with academic staff.

The role would suit an organised, detail orientated individual who can manage their own workload and problem solve effectively. Excellent communication skills and strong interpersonal skills are essential.

This is a full-time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. PhD qualified in relevant subject area, or equivalent experience.
  2. Relevant experience and track record in Biological NMR and/or Structural Biology, including data collection and analysis for complex multidimensional NMR experiments.
  3. Familiarity with NMR spectrometer hardware and electronics. Good command-line, shell scripting, and/or programming, software development skills, proficiency using TopSpin and/or software for biomolecular NMR data analysis (e.g. CCPNMR).)
  4. Experience of some elements of facility management, for example - dealing with day-to-day operations in a similar facility, staff supervision, procurement or financial processes.
  5. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex findings verbally and to write scientific reports to a high standard.
  6. A good knowledge of health and safety procedures and its implementation in the workplace.
  7. Ability to deal and interact positively with a wide range of people to develop working relationships with team members, academics and clinical and administrative staff.
  8. Ability to analyse and prioritise tasks, work under pressure, and against deadlines.

Desirable criteria

  1. People management/line management experience
  2. Experience of use of NMR for chemistry, small molecules and/or metabolomics application
  3. Experience supervising and teaching researchers
  4. Budget management experience
  5. Knowledge of HE institutions and how funding is obtained
