ESG Accounting Senior Manager - CR & Sustainability

The Team

The CR & Sustainability team has four pillars:

  • ESG Reporting: Responsible for the preparation and assurance of KPMG UK's Annual Review (non-financial), ESG accreditation submissions to external bodies and ESG risks (as they relate to KPMG's own ESG strategy).

This role sits within the ESG Reporting pillar.

The Role

The regulation, scope and scrutiny over corporate ESG strategy and reporting is increasing. It is essential we get this right, for both our performance and our reputation. We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Manager to join our team to lead on the interpretation and application of ESG accounting procedures and standards.

The Senior Manager will be responsible for preparing the non-financial data for the firm's Annual Review, including a complete GHG inventory, measuring the impact of our community programmes and verifying our diversity data. The successful candidate will manage the relationship with our independent external auditors, overseeing their performance of a limited assurance review of our data.

Throughout the year, the Senior Manager will be responsible for measuring and analysing the firm's ESG performance, supporting strategy decisions with MI and reporting to senior stakeholders. The ability to develop strategies is important, as this role will be responsible for influencing the direction of the firm's ESG accounting, creating the methodology to measure new metrics and implementing processes to comply with emerging regulatory reporting requirements.

Stakeholder engagement is essential for this role to support the collection of data and the oversight of internal processes and controls that ensure data quality.

This role requires excellent communication skills, comfort with complex data, an understanding of ESG accounting standards and reporting regulations and experience of quality assurance processes.

Responsibilities

Accounting and assurance:

  • Apply ESG accounting procedures, ensuring compliance with relevant accounting standards and all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Monitor ESG accounting for alignment with industry best practice and guidance.
  • Interpret and maintain a deep understanding of relevant accounting principles (GHGP, SASB) and relevant UK and international reporting requirements (UK SRS, IFRS, Companies Act), including how they apply to KPMG organisational boundaries.
  • Develop new methodologies to measure additional metrics, as required.
  • Manage the relationship with our independent external auditors, overseeing their performance of a limited assurance review of our data.
  • Conduct internal testing procedures to ensure the integrity of the data and the methodologies.

Strategy development and supporting business decisions:

  • Year-round ESG performance measurement, reporting back to senior stakeholders on a regular basis.
  • Provide data analysis and projections to support in the setting of ESG targets and monitoring the firm's performance.
  • Support data owners in understanding how their data feeds into the firm's ESG targets and KPIs.
  • Support the Head of ESG Corporate Reporting in conducting reviews of the data, processes and information disclosed publicly, taking industry best-practice, expert guidance, standards and legislation into consideration and ensuring compliance.
  • Support the Head of ESG Corporate Reporting in reviewing new legislation and reporting standards, the impact on the firm and the risk of not complying.
  • Develop solutions to reporting and data problems.
  • Prepare quarterly updates for the KPMG Environment Steering Committee.
  • Prepare internal MI dashboard updates and respond to ad-hoc data requests.

Data management and quality controls:

  • Develop catalogued processes.
  • Oversee the continuous review and implementation of improvements to ESG data processes.
  • Maintain good relationships with data owners across the firm, engaging with them regularly on their data and providing direction and training to allow them to make improvements to their data processes.

Stakeholder engagement:

  • Engage with cross-function stakeholders on an ongoing basis to provide direction on data requirements.
  • Engage with KPMG suppliers to provide direction and training on the methodologies they should use for measuring and allocating their emissions.
  • Provide day-to-day management support to the Data & Regulation Assistant Manager on the projects above.

Experience and skills

  • In-depth knowledge of relevant ESG accounting standards, particularly the GHG Protocol.
  • An understanding of community investment reporting and IDE data.
  • Experience in ESG accounting (including carbon accounting), financial accounting, audit or assurance.
  • Experience of handling complex data and using advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Strong data analysis skills, with excellent statistical and numerical reasoning.
  • Experience implementing and managing data quality controls.
  • Demonstrable experience of successful stakeholder engagement and collaboration.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex problems and solutions in an engaging and understandable way.
  • Strong project management and organisational skills, delivering high quality work on time and to budget.
  • Ability to understand the views of others, anticipating, listening and addressing any concerns.
  • Demonstrate values-led behaviour, always.
