Hull University Students' Union is a Charity, with a large trading subsidiary which included SPAR and JD Wetherspoon; our primary purposes are:

  • Advancement of education, promoting the interests and welfare of students during study and representing, supporting and advising students.
  • Being the recognised representative channel between students and the University of Hull and other representative bodies.
  • Providing social, cultural sporting, recreational activities, and forums for discussions and debate for the personal development of its students.

Our Trading Subsidiary provides a range of services for students including, a Supermarket, a pub, a nightclub, coffee and food outlets.

General duties and responsibilities

  • To create and deliver a fun, innovative and diverse range of Commercial student events which make effective use of the Commercial spaces within the Student Union.
  • To increase external revenue streams by promoting, co-ordinating and managing the use of the Asylum space for external live and hospitality themed events.
  • To hold responsibility for ensuring that all entertainment and event planning stays within budgeted allocations.
  • To negotiate best value contracts and payrates with external stakeholders within the organisation's financial framework.
  • To manage our Entertainments and Sound & lighting student staff ensuring that they have the correct level of training, supervision, direction, information, and support to complete all the jobs required of them throughout their shift.
  • To organise external technical support and annual maintenance of the AV equipment.
  • To work with the Marketing department to create attractive material and to successfully promote all events and services within the Commercial areas of Hull University Students Union.
  • To ensure that there is a strong cohesion between the Bars, Facilities and Retail Managers ensuring good communication is provided about what is required from each department for each event.
  • To ensure that all events are added to our ticketing platform within appropriate timescales to ensure promotion and sales of each event are maximised.
  • To liaise with internal and external stakeholders for all events and services operating within the Students Union.
  • To deliver exceptional customer service with internal and external customers of Hull University Students Union.
  • To ensure that standards and cleanliness of the Entertainments department is of an exceptional standard.
  • Ensure that all till POS equipment is operational for on the door payments for entry and cloakroom.
  • To ensure that the security of AV equipment is not compromised and that all lock down procedures are completed.
  • To contribute to the overall Commercial Management team for the successful running of Hull University Students Union Commercial department.
  • Maintain a positive atmosphere amongst all staff and customers.
  • Ensure confidentiality at all times in the handling and dissemination of information and data, and embedding and implementing GDPR across the workload.
  • Carry out all duties in line with the Venue/Wetherspoon and HUSU's policies and procedures and in line with the organisation's values and strategic aims.
  • To ensure that you are operating to all statutory laws relating to Licensing, Health & Safety and Food Hygiene.
  • To ensure that all events follow the conditions of the Premise Licence.
  • To attend compulsory training days and complete all online training programmes as required.
  • Carry out any other reasonable instruction asked by the Head of Commercial Services.

About You

Essential DesirableQualifications &Training

  • Relevant qualification held within the Entertainments/Hospitality industry.
  • Good standard of education
  • Personal licence
  • SIA

Experience

  • Previous experience of working within the Entertainments/events industry which includes nightclub and live events.
  • Experience working with venue AV systems.
  • Previous customer service experience.
  • Experience managing a team of staff.
  • Experience in working with social media suites to effectively promote events.
  • Previous experience in budget management.
  • Experience working with external promoters.
  • Experience working with ticketing platforms.

Skills/ability/Knowledge

  • Understanding of a Students Union and the role our entertainments department plays within this environment.
  • Understanding of current trends within the events and entertainments industry.
  • Knowledge of Licensing and Health & Safety Law within a licensed venue.
  • Understanding of operating safe licensed venues.
  • High energy and enthusiasm for working within the entertainments/events industry.
  • The ability to work under pressure.
  • Excellent communicator.
  • Innovative in putting on a diverse range of events programme.
  • To be able to demonstrate the ability to work on your own initiative and within a team.
  • To be able to demonstrate your ability to have an organised approach in your working methods.
  • To be competent in your ability with literacy, numeracy, IT and communication skills.
  • To be flexible in your approach to your working hours. (This role includes working late nights).
  • To be eligible to work in the UK.
  • To have a UK bank account in your own name.
  • To be fluent in the English language.
  • Have a fixed place of residence and live within a reasonable travelling distance

Directly responsibility of the Entertainments Budget. Indirect responsibility of the Bars Budget.
