About the role:

Managing a strong culture of ownership, you will be responsible for teams that maintain, repair and improve our university maintenance facilities, helping to create an outstanding environment for learning and research. The postholder will ensure a high-quality, customer-focused service that supports the University's operational and strategic goals.

  1. Adopt and maintain a responsive, customer-oriented engineering operations service ensuring issues are resolved quickly and effectively.
  2. Follow and apply risk management processes and report potential risks.
  3. Ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements, keeping accurate records and systems/documentation up to date.
  4. Support and manage the implementation of service improvements and share innovative ideas.
  5. Coordinate with engineers, contractors and other team members to deliver mechanical/electrical services, fabric maintenance and BMS support, while ensuring safety and quality standards are met.
  6. Ensure the team is fully trained and follows best practice. Ensure completion of all mandated Health & Safety training, including eLearning modules, within required timeframes to maintain compliance with statutory and organisational standards.
  7. Work within agreed budgets, control costs and highlight any variances.
  8. Encourage energy saving practices, support sustainability and carbon reduction.
  9. Prepare maintenance reports, including statutory compliance.
  10. Manage holiday, recruitment and sickness ensuring that minimum staffing numbers are maintained at all times.
  11. Participate in the on call system as point of escalation and incident management.
  12. To act as the "second" for the Head of Campus Engineering when absent

Stakeholder Management:

Proactively engage with campus stakeholders by regular in person meetings, calls and written communication.

Ensure Safe, Efficient, and Timely Maintenance Operations:

Oversee the execution of all planned and/or reactive maintenance activities, ensuring they are carried out in a safe, efficient, and timely manner. Always promote a safety-first culture and adherence to health and safety regulations.

Enhance Performance and Reporting Standards:

Continuously improve the performance of engineering and maintenance operations by implementing effective monitoring tools, KPIs, and reporting mechanisms. Ensure timely and transparent communication of performance data to both management and operational teams.

Develop Team Competency and Technical Readiness:

Ensure all team members are appropriately trained, certified, and competent to perform their duties. Provide clear instruction and support for the operation of new systems and installations and maintain a structured programme for ongoing professional development. Support upskilling initiatives.

Ensure Financial Efficiency and Value for Money:

Monitor and manage maintenance-related expenditure to ensure cost-effectiveness and value for money. Identify opportunities for savings and efficiencies without compromising service quality or compliance.

Champion Sustainability and Environmental Responsibility:

Lead the implementation of sustainable facilities management practices by developing and applying campus-wide environmental policies and management systems. Support the University's broader sustainability and carbon reduction goals.

Collaborate on Infrastructure and Asset Management Projects:

Work closely with the FM Asset Management Team to support the delivery of infrastructure upgrades and capital projects. Ensure the effective handover and integration of new assets, including the management of Operations & Maintenance (O&M) documentation in line with Soft Landings principles.

Maintain and Report on Risk Registers:

Develop and maintain a comprehensive, building-specific Risk Register. Ensure risks are regularly reviewed, updated, and included in routine reporting to support informed decision-making and proactive risk mitigation.

Out of Hours and Escalation:

Participate as point of escalation and lead incident management in line with the on-call rota. Be available to attend site outside of normal working hours when necessary to support critical maintenance procedures or specialist contractor activities.

Support Business Continuity and Risk Mitigation Planning:

Assist the Head of Campus Engineering Operations in the development and implementation of a robust Business Continuity Plan. Contribute to risk mitigation strategies that ensure service resilience and operational continuity.

Foster a Collaborative, Customer-Focused Culture:

Work in partnership with the FM Campus Operations Teams to deliver a seamless, integrated service. Promote a "one team" ethos and ensure consistently high standards of customer service across all touchpoints.

Conduct Quality Assurance Activities:

Undertake regular quality surveys and audits to assess service delivery, identify areas for improvement, and ensure compliance with internal and external standards.

Fulfil Financial and Administrative Duties:

Support financial planning and reporting processes, including budget tracking, forecasting, and procurement activities. Ensure financial responsibilities are carried out accurately and in line with university policies.

Lead on Staff Engagement and Performance Management:

Conduct regular one-to-one meetings and Performance Development Reviews (PDRs) with team members. Provide constructive feedback, set clear objectives, and support career development to foster a high-performing and motivated team.

HR Management:

Undertake/chair HR investigations and managerial duties relating to HR matters as and when required.

This is a full time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

About you:

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. NVQ3 Level or equivalent in an Engineering discipline
  2. IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent
  3. Proven managerial experience in managing multidisciplinary technical staff across different buildings
  4. Excellent computer skills using Microsoft Office and particularly Microsoft Excel
  5. Excellent communication skills both oral and written, including an ability to write technical and non-technical papers including survey reports as required

Desirable criteria

  1. Certificate in Management Studies or evidence of management / leadership training
  2. Pressure System Authorised Person (AP)
  3. HV/LV Electrical Authorised Person (AP)
