Job Description

Scope & key interfaces

The Engineering Manager operates at the intersection of technology, strategy, and cross- functional collaboration. This role is responsible for leading the engineering function within a defined business area, working in close partnership with the Leadership Group to shape and execute strategic initiatives. The role will engage with multiple brands, formats, and functions, ensuring engineering solutions are aligned with divisional and/or functional objectives.

Key interfaces include Product Management, Architecture, Delivery, Commercial, Data, and wider Technology teams, as well as senior business stakeholders. The role plays a pivotal part in identifying and leveraging strategic opportunities that enhance business performance and contribute to long-term goals. By influencing and aligning cross- functional teams, the Engineering Manager ensures that technology plans are fit-for- purpose, scalable, and closely integrated with broader commercial and operational priorities.

The role acts as a critical bridge between strategic vision and technical execution, balancing day-to-day delivery with longer-term capability building, while fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Outcomes and Key Performance Indicators

  • Develop, maintain and enhance key data and integration platforms and the transition to Cloud first solutions
  • Develop integration solutions in a secure and scalable way connecting data and platforms to create business value
  • Build out and maintain cloud-based environments and components that align to Greene King deployment principles such as CI & CD pipelines
  • Creating Engineering standards, aligning internal and partner teams and measuring adherence to this
  • Work with Project Managers and CI workstreams to understand planned initiatives, act as the technical lead providing advice, guidance and ultimately solutions for projects and the business
  • Contribute and collaborate with Architecture to ensure solutions follow agreed patterns
  • Write clean code using industry best practise and modern techniques
  • Create and maintain Dev Ops pipelines to provide streamlined development flows, using automation and a security first approach to meet all core development standards and principles
  • Maintain technical documentation to support the work undertaken
  • Research and recommend areas to improve and enhance processes or techniques for engineering
  • Mentoring and developing other team members
  • Example KPIs include Defect Density, Application Response Time, Pull Request Merge Time, Sprint Velocity, Automation Coverage, Change Failure Rate, Deployment Frequency and Test Coverage rate

  • Lead the thinking and development of software engineering, including having a strong understanding of modern integration software and tooling
  • Proven problem solver, takes a proactive approach to finding the right solution to meet customers' needs
  • Able to coach and mentor team members to share knowledge and support the growth of the team
  • Demonstrates customer-focused ownership and accountability
  • Is able to build good user relationships
  • Is a highly motivated team player who demonstrates team-centred behaviours
  • Highly effective communication skills
  • Able to deliver in a fast-moving, changing business environment
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring for other Engineers
  • Has a proven track record of delivering results with enthusiasm and a positive "can- do" attitude, able to work with multiple priorities and progress activities with urgency and pace
  • Welcome and can support business change in terms of new and evolving processes that will support Greene King
  • Proactive and able to enhance and evolve all aspects of themselves and the team in terms of new processes, software and techniques
  • Strong experience in developing solutions using a range of technologies including .net, Azure Data Factory, JSON, XML and data warehouses.
  • Experience of cloud-based environment builds using Microsoft Azure or AWS in a structured way using infrastructure as code
  • Experience of building and maintaining software toolsets and pipelines to support automated and robust software development practices
  • Experience of security solutions and controls that must be used in Digital
  • Experience of defining, governing, and evolving engineering principles
  • Strong knowledge of software development standards, best practices such as TDD, BDD
  • Experience of creating technical documentation to support solution design, delivery, and release activities
  • Experience of working with 3rd party engineering teams to collaborate and deliver solutions
  • Experience of event-driven Architecture patterns
  • Familiar with building out HA/ DR compliant solutions that can handle scaled public Digital solutions
  • Computer Science degree
  • Interest in AI
  • Certifications in Cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, and integration platforms (nice to have)
