Senior Electrical, Control and Instrumentation (EC&I) Design Engineers

AWE is recruiting for several different roles across the Electrical, Control and Instrumentation (EC&I) Specialist Function. These roles include both Senior EC&I Design Engineers and EC&I Design Engineers.

Do you have knowledge or experience in any of the following areas? If so, we would like to hear from you.

  • Electrical (E) Low Voltage (LV) design (BS 7671)

  • Control and Instrumentation (C&I) design (BS 6739) and the design of control panels (BS 60204)

  • Electrical (E) High Voltage (HV), distribution system, design

  • Functional Safety of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic, safety-related systems (IEC 61508 and IEC 61511)

  • Machinery Safety (ISO 13849 and / or IEC 62061)

  • Design substantiation and in service assessment of EC&I equipment and systems

  • Cyber security for industrial automation and control systems (IEC 62443)

  • Maintenance of EC&I equipment and systems

  • Commissioning and testing of EC&I equipment and systems

  • Alarm systems (IEC 62682 and / or EEMUA 191)

  • Lightning and surge protection equipment and systems

  • Explosive atmospheres (IEC 60079)

  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) (IEC 61000)

  • Fire detection and alarm equipment and systems (IEC 60839-5-1)

  • PID controllers and drives

  • PLC and SCADA software, equipment and systems

  • CE/UKCA Marking

Below is a summary of the opportunities available to you:

EC&I Compliance Team:

The EC&I Compliance team comprise of two Technical Authorities (TA); the Electrical (E) TA and Control and Instrumentation (C&I) TA. Their work can include anything from providing guidance on best practice at design reviews, to reviewing Functional Safety Assessments (FSA) and CE Marking.

The TAs are the Subject Matter Experts (SME) in their field and are called upon from across the business to share their expertise and guidance, ensuring everything we do is safe and to industry standards.

As a member of the TA, you would be tasked directly by the Lead Technical Authority (LTA).

Engineering Delivery Team:

The Capital Engineering Delivery team undertakes engineering assessment and design work in support of several key portfolios:

  • Nuclear Risk Management - ensuring that the engineering assets supporting our safety cases are suitable and sufficient to protect our people and the public

  • Design assessment of existing assets and identification of areas for improvement

  • Engineering design for new assets and infrastructure, or for modification of existing installations

We would be interested in hearing from candidates who can demonstrate knowledge or experience in the following:

  • A Degree, HND/HNC or an equivalent vocational qualification, in an engineering discipline

  • Experience of working within a project environment

  • Experience in preparing technical reports and documents

  • Knowledge of developing, testing and evaluating engineering designs

  • Good written, verbal and presentation skills

Experience/understanding of any of the following would be advantageous, but not essential as role specific training will be given:

  • CEng, IEng or be working towards professional registration

  • Membership or associate Membership of a Professional Engineering Institution

  • Familiarity with British and ISO Standards

  • Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) including configuration management and quality control

  • A good understanding of the Health and Safety at Work Act (HSAWA), Construction Design Management (CDM), risk assessments, Electricity at Work Regulations (EWR)

  • Experience of Safety Cases or working in a highly regulated (e.g. Nuclear, Pharmaceutical, Oil and Gas) industry would be beneficial

  • Experience working in 2D and 3D CAD

General Responsibilities (this may vary depending on role):

  • Delivery of own agreed objectives / project deliverables

  • Being directly responsible for engaging with stakeholders across the company to progress design activities, ensuring compliance with safety, security and performance with input from subject matter experts. Aid planning activities for future design activities

  • Contribute to the planning and execution of tasks in order to deliver specific agreed objectives on time, demonstrating control of cost and quality

  • Support the progress of designs through product lifecycle

  • Understanding of the hazards and associated risks of any work conducted and, where required, safely use specialised equipment

  • Understanding customer requirements and being able to translate these into engineering solutions

  • Contribute to the delivery of conceptual designs, detail designs, manufacturing specifications, operational documentation and validation evidence for mechanical engineering solutions in relation to defined requirements

  • Contribute to the production and delivery of high-quality technical reports and presentations

  • Identify and support opportunities for cost savings, efficiency and business improvement

  • Assist the Technical Lead in managing partnerships

  • Support the Senior Engineer in scoping, planning, and estimating future activities

  • Organise personal training and development under the guidance of a professional mentor

What will you get from us?

Salary (depending on suitability and experience):

EC&I Design Engineers - £37,860 - £56,800

Senior EC&I Design Engineers - £47,690 - £75,370
