Brief Description

As part of Network Rails commitment to "Creating a cleaner, greener, socially responsible railway" we are looking for an Ecologist with a strong background in ecological and mitigation advice. You will provide ecological leadership to our various frontline rail operations and delivery teams across the Southern Region's expansive and diverse network. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to a unique 'national green corridor' and have a major impact on major UK infrastructure.
About the role (External)

Key Accountabilities

Undertake and complete a range of Ecological ecological field surveys, including protected species, invasive and habitat surveys and extended Phase 1 Habitat sSurveys.

Collate, write up and review survey results and mapping target notes and review to identify appropriate recommendations.

Analyse and interpret data, using specialist software programs. Produce reports to a high technical standard within prescribed timescales to cover ecology requirements.

Support the Managemanagement of the implementingation and embedding of recommendations to deliver continuous continual improvement.

Undertake and complete environmental impact assessments.

Advise onLead the development of appropriate mitigation strategies and enhancement measures, utilising results of surveys and liaising with Environmental Specialist's and the Arboriculture team.

Analyse and interpret data, using specialist software programs. Produce periodic and ad hoc reports to a high technical standard within prescribed timescales.

Provide office and field based support through Provide specialist ecological advice, and guidance and supervision to site managers, engineers, planners, and others associated with the undertaking and completion of surveys and / or assessments.

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including contractors, statutory bodies, local authorities, and members of the public.

Assist and contribute to the in the production of environmental appraisal other sustainability periodic and ad-hoc reports.

Support with biodiversity net gain strategy

Support with national, regional and local projects and initiatives

Carry out research as required.

Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Essential

• Comprehensive field experience

• An appropriate academic qualification in Ecology or a related discipline. A relevant higher degree in Ecology, Zoology, Biological Sciences, or other relevant Environmental Sciences

• Good understanding and working knowledge of ecology, legislation and survey best practice

• Good understanding of UK and European wildlife legislation and best practice guidance experience

• Be able to identify baseline Ecological constraints during site visits

• Have significant experience of standard survey protocols and methodologies

• Ability to complete protected rare species surveys

• Good interpersonal, influencing, communication and organisation skills

• Task orientated team player and who is also comfortable working independently

• Strong report writing skillsAbility to write clear, concise reports

• Full/associate/graduate membership of Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) (depending on experience) or eligible for this.

Desirable

• Knowledge of operational railway environment

• Knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard

• One or more protected species licences e.g. GCN, bat or dormouse

• Full/associate/graduate membership of Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) (depending on experience)

• Experience attending client meetings and working with multi-disciplinary teams

• Competent with Microsoft Office
